Plans for WinterFest 2007, "Home for the Holidays," are taking shape.
The event, sponsored by the Portland Area Chamber of Commerce, will be held Thursday, Nov. 15 through Sunday, Nov. 18.
Highlights will include lighting of a community Christmas tree, Christmas at the Courthouse, a kids' carnival, open houses for downtown merchants and the courthouse, and tours of area homes decked out for the holidays.
Here is a look at the schedule of events for the WinterFest celebration:
Thursday, Nov. 16
6:30 p.m. - Live nativity, former fire station, North Commerce St.
7 p.m. - Lighting of the community Christmas tree, south lawn of the Jay County Courthouse, which will be decorated and open to the public during the evening hours.
Friday, Nov. 16
5 p.m. - Arts Place Holiday Auction (bidding begins at 6 p.m.)
Saturday, Nov. 17
8-11 a.m. - Breakfast with the Adventure Kids, East Jay Middle School.
8-11 a.m. - Kids' Karnival, East Jay Middle School.
9 a.m.-6 p.m. - Merchant open house.
2:30-4:30 p.m. - Little Miss WinterFest contest.
Noon-3 p.m. - Carriage rides on Court Street (charge is one can of food for local food pantry.
6 p.m. - Holiday Parade of Lights, Meridian Street. Santa will visit with kids in the courthouse following the parade.
Sunday, Nov. 18
Noon-5 p.m. - Tour the homes of Mike and Pat Szakaly, Ron and Mary Laux, Thaddeus and Sarah Holmes, John and Diane Coldren and the Jay County Retirement Center. Tickets required.

Networking luncheon
Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita will be the featured speaker at the Portland Chamber of Commerce's Noon Networking Luncheon on Tuesday, Oct. 30.
Cost of lunch is $8.
