Winterfest plans take shape for November (10/28/06)
Business roundup
Winterfest, Home for the Holidays is just around the corner, and Portland Area Chamber of Commerce members are making last minute plans for the annual event.
Highlights of the festival again will include the Little Miss Winterfest competition and the parade of lights.
The festival begins with a live nativity production on Thursday, Nov. 16, from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. at the old Portland Fire Station and lighting of the community Christmas tree at 7 p.m. on the south side of the courthouse. Visitors will then be singing Christmas carols.
Portland's retail merchants will be participating in a holiday open house throughout the day Friday, and the annual Arts Place holiday benefit auction will highlight the evening's events.
Doors at Arts Place will open at 5 p.m., and bidding will begin at 6 p.m.
Saturday's full day of activities begin with breakfast with Ronald McDonald and Tow Mater from 8 to 11 a.m. at East Jay Middle School.
Children's' tickets are $5 and adult tickets are $2.50 and are available at the Portland chamber office and Locker's Touch of Country on West Votaw Street.
There will be free carriage rides from noon to 2 p.m. and the Little Miss Winterfest competition will begin at 2:30 p.m. on the stage in the courthouse auditorium.
While visitors are in the courthouse, they are encouraged to vote for their favorite Christmas tree decorated by Jay County organizations.
Businesses, industries, clubs and organizations are encouraged to participate in the 15th annual Holiday Parade of Lights that begins at 6 p.m. through downtown Portland.
Line-up for the parade is at 5 p.m. at East Jay Middle School.
All entries must be lighted in some way by battery, generator, flashlights or lanterns. Any candy offered is to be handed to children, not thrown, to ensure safety in the dark, planners urge.
Cash prizes will be awarded in six categories: business/industry; adult organizations; youth organizations; best animal entry; best decorated vehicle; and best over-all float.
Entry forms should be returned to the Portland Area Chamber of Commerce office at 118 S. Meridian St., Portland, by Nov. 14.
Winterfest will conclude with the Holiday home tours on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
Homes on this year's tour include Barry and Ami Huffman, 403 E. Main St.; Steve and Pam Zielinski, 1913 S. Nandel Lane, Robert and Denice Bell, 1348 S. Meridian St., Don and Cindy Denney, 2894 South Southtown Place, and the Museum of the Soldier at 510 E. Arch St.
