WJ gridders defeat Indians (10/01/2008)

DUNKIRK - A 13-0 deficit with less than two minutes left meant nothing to the Eagles.

West Jay's seventh grade football team scored twice in the closing moments of Tuesday's game against visiting Union City Westside to eke out its first win of the year, 14-13. The eighth grade squad rolled by a 46-0 final.

Billy Kimble put the WJMS seventh grade team's first points on the board on a 60-yard touchdown run with about a minute left in the game. The Eagles (1-4) managed to get the ball back and Toby McCallister tossed a TD pass to Sean Winget and Kimble ran in for the two-point conversion.

Kimble picked up 81 yards on 14 carries, and McCallister's 45-yard TD pass was his only completion of the night. Singet had five tackles, one sack and a key blocked extra point.

Tyler Back had a 70-yard TD run and a 40-yard TD pass to Dustin Tighe for the eighth grade team (4-1), and Blake Crouch scored on a 60-yard punt return and a 20-yard run. Isaac Nicklay and Lucas Wiemer each added TD runs in the victory, and Wiemer and Jason Farmer each had three tackles.

EJ gridder top Dennis

RICHMOND - The East Jay football teams improved to 4-1 with wins Tuesday over Richmond Dennis.

The eighth grade Chiefs came away with a 12-0 shutout, and the seventh graders won 26-20.

Brock McFarland was a perfect 7-for-7 passing for 179 yards and a touchdown to goal along with 4.5 tackles and 1.5 sacks for the eighth grade team. Scott Schwieterman caught three passes for 102 yards, and Cody Bellis had a 3-yard TD run.

Ryan Claytor powered the EJMS seventh graders with 14 carries for 133 yards and two TDs. Jason Houston caught two passes from Wesley Hibbard for 51 yards, and Dylan McKibben made 5.5 tackles.

Eagle spikers win

PONETO - West Jay's eighth grade volleyball team won a pair of close games for a 25-22, 25-21 victory Tuesday over the host Southern Wells Raiders. The seventh graders rallied for a 15-25, 25-12, 15-12 win.

Shelby Shirk scored 10 points, including seven in the opening game, to lead the eighth grade squad. Ashton Mangus scored all of her seven points in the second game, and Shadle Hale finished with five.

Ashley Motter posted 15 points for the seventh grade team, and Chelsea Tighe followed with 14. Betsy Hoffman added 11 points.

Flyers defeat Fort

MARIA STEIN, Ohio - Fort Recovery's eighth grade volleyball team forced a third game Tuesday, but still fell 25-11, 21-25, 16-25 to the host Marion Local Flyers. The seventh grade team lost 25-10, 25-11.

Janelle Schwieterman paced the eighth graders (8-4) with five points and three kills. Amy Link had four kills and two blocks, Heather Vaughn scored seven points and Emily Link put up five assists.

Ashley Homan's 11 digs and three points led the seventh graders. Jackie Fullenkamp had two points and a kill, and Morgan Dues also scored two points.

Chiefs win three

The East Jay volleyball teams all won Tuesday night with the seventh graders topping visiting Union City Westside 25-14, 25-5 and the eighth grade team winning 9-25, 25-16, 15-13. The sixth grade Chiefs fought off Yorktown 24-25, 25-19, 15-10.

Katlin Petro powered the EJMS seventh graders (8-1) with 14 aces and a pair of digs, and Ali Inman had four assists and two digs. Bailey Weatherhead put up four assists, and Abby Dunlavy and Sydney Bost each had three kills.

Abbey Vance scored seven points and Hannah Ainsworth totaled seven assists for the eighth grade Chiefs (5-4). Mikayla Wellman had six points, Jade Secor finished with three kills and Paige Lennartz added two digs.

Jessica Kerrigan powered the EJMS sixth grad team (9-2) with 12 points and three assists. Breanne McIntire and Catherine Dunn each had four digs and two kills, Michelle Wellman scored seven points and Malarie Houck had three assists.[[In-content Ad]]
