Taking Note
West Jay Middle School announces its honor roll students for the first nine week grading period.
Making the sixth grade all A honor roll were Betsy Huffman and Brooke Hurst.
Students making the sixth grade A-B honor roll were Tiffany Barton, Darrian Bechtol, Blake Bennett, Brea Burcham, Rylee Clemmons, Kimbra Edwards, Jenna Ferguson, Jesse Finnerty, Takoa Knight, Jon Lowe, Evan Masters, Chaz McClain, Ashley Motter, Quentin Smith, Alex Thompson and Katherine Wilson.
Making the seventh grade all A honor roll were Tasha McCowan, Laura Morrison, Clayton Scott and Shelby Wendel.

Art Place events
Tom Abbott will have the exhibit Figure * Farm * Shadow from Nov. 9 through Dec. 21 at Arts Place, 131 E. Walnut St. in Portland.
The hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m.
The exhibit is sponsored by Dr. Mark and Donna Haggenjos and Dr. R. Scott and Rayma Frankenfield.
The 25th Annual Arts Place Holiday Benefit Auction will be Friday, Nov. 16, at Arts Place. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the auction begins at 6 p.m.
Items to auction include homemade baked items, collectibles, trips and getaways and holiday items. Proceeds will support the programs and services of Arts Place, including Arts in the Parks, MusicWorks, Innovations, exhibits and the annual performances series.

The eight annual "Get Caught Reading Photo Contest" is taking place at Jay County Public Library. Entries should be a planned photograph of someone caught reading in an unusual or amusing manner. Photographs should be at least 3 X 5 but no larger than 8 x 10, and should be matted or framed.
The age categories are six to 10 years; 11 to 14 years; 15 to 18 years and 18 and older.
Photographs must be submitted between Monday, Nov. 5, and Thursday, Nov. 8, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Entry forms are available at the library at 315 N. Ship St., Portland.

"The Virginian" by Owen Wister is the chosen book for the November book discussion group. The book is the first great western novel.
The discussion group meets the third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. You may register at the library or by calling (260) 726-7890.

A Recipe Exchange and Cookie Tasting will be Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. at the library. Bring a dozen cookies and a recipe to share.
Cookies will be sampled and a hot beverage will be provided.

The program "Mindless eating: Why we eat more than we think" will be held Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Jay County Public Library. Janet Stafford, Madison County Extension Educator, will discuss how the mind makes many food related decisions.

Annual meeting
Jay Community Center will have its annual meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 5:30 p.m. at the Community Center. There will be tours of the building and appetizers from 5:30 to 6 p.m. and the annual meeting and door prizes from 6 to 7 p.m.

Little Miss Contest
The Portland Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the Little Miss Winterfest Contest for girls ages seven to 10. Anyone interested may call Nancy Moser at (260) 726-2000 or the Portland Chamber of Commerce at (260) 726-4481.
Winterfest will be held Saturday, Nov. 17, in Portland.
Crafters needed
A craft show will be held Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Portland Lions Civic Center and crafters are needed. Anyone who is interested should call (260) 997-6727. The show is sponsored by the Portland Lions Club.
Quilt show
The Sixth Annual Callithumpian Quilt Show will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Riverside Center, 231 E. Monroe St. in Decatur. The hours will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon until 4 p.m.
Anyone wanting to enter a quilt or quilted item, may bring them to the Riverside Center on Friday between 2 and 6 p.m. Items will need to be picked up on Sunday between 4:30 and 5 p.m.
Quilt judging, by Doris Goins, will be available for $5 per item. A trunk show will be Saturday at 1 p.m. and a style show will be held Sunday at 1 p.m.
