Woo powers Jay Co. in second (09/03/03)

Jay County Roundup

A slim lead turned into a rout thanks to a two-minute flurry of action by Sergio Woo.

Woo scored twice in 1:15, and the Jay County boys soccer team went on to a 5-0 victory over the Connersville Spartans. The win makes the Patriots 3-1, 1-0 in the Olympic Athletic Conference.

Jay County was up 1-0 thanks to a Kyle Carpenter goal — his fifth in a row — in the first half when Woo went to work. Seventeen minutes into the second half he took control of the ball in the left corner, only to have it knocked away for a corner kick.

That turned out to be a bad move for the Spartans, as Woo curved the corner kick into the net for his second score of the season and a 2-0 lead.

He struck again with 21:07 left on the clock, drilling a one-touch volley into the back of the net to put the Patriots well in control. Mason Shreve and Dave Johnston added scores in the last 10 minutes of play for the final margin.

Luke McClung assisted on one of the Jay County goals. Trent Bailey saved the only three Connersville shots on goal.

Jay County continues its five-game road trip Thursday when it visits Norwell at 5 p.m.

St. Myers leads JC spikers

Erin St. Myers had a breakout match Tuesday, leading the Jay County volleyball team to an 18-21, 21-12, 21-18, 21-14 victory over the Fort Wayne South Side Archers.

St. Myers baffled South Side with her serving, recording five aces. She scored 18 points overall, three times as many as her next closest teammate.

She also finished as the team leader with 18 digs, and was second on the squad with eight kills.

Sara Hough racked up 12 kills, and had 16 digs. Becki Beeler came away with 13 digs, and Sarah Ainsworth put up 25 assists.

The Patriots (4-5) will visit the Class 2A No. 3 Wapahani Raiders Thursday at 6 p.m.

Jay County’s junior varsity team improved to 4-2 with a 21-7, 21-4 stomping of South Side.
