Wood encouraged despite loss (04/14/05)

Jay County roundup

DECATUR — It wasn’t a win, but it was a step in the right direction.

The Jay County softball team fell behind by eight runs Wednesday, but coach Jack Wood was encouraged by the way it fought back. The Patriots scored five times in the final three innings in an 8-5 defeat to the Bellmont Squaws.

Trisha Champ and Erica Clark paced the late offensive outburst — two runs in the fifth inning and three in the seventh — which wasn’t quite enough after Bellmont jumped on top with two runs in the second inning, four in the third and two in the fourth. Champ had a single, a run and three RBIs, and Clark finished the game 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Lisa Weitzel singled and scored twice, Amber Champ had a hit and an RBI, and Andrea Current had a hit and a run.

Brittany Logue took the defeat as Jay County slipped to 0-5, allowing eight runs — six earned — on 14 hits in four innings.

Tennis drops 3rd straight

PORTLAND — The Jay County girls tennis team lost its third straight match Wednesday, 4-1 at the hands of the three-time defending sectional champion Marion Giants.

The Patriots (1-3), who went with their fourth different lineup in four matches, got their lone win at No. 2 singles. Erin St. Myers knocked off Meryle Lester 6-3, 6-2.

In other singles matches Whitney Schemenaur fell to Stephanie Flaig 6-2, 6-2 and Julie Sours lost to Amee Patel 6-2, 6-2.

At No. 1 doubles, Brianne Morrical and Stephanie Homan had a chance at a win in a second-set tiebreaker. But, Marion’s Joanna Lucas and Larissa Bariado survived and then took the third set for the 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win.

Carrisa Wilkins and Jenae Horn lost to Alysa Curfman and Carling Barrett in the No. 2 doubles match 6-1, 6-0.

Jay County’s junior varsity team got its first victory of the season, 3-2. Earning wins were Angie Stults, Caitlin Dunn and the team of Tiffani Bickel and Heather Ayers.

WJ track loses pair

DUNKIRK — Four athletes each won a pair of events for the West Jay track teams Wednesday as they hosted Hartford City, but the Eagles still took a couple of defeats. The boys team lost 56-44, and the girls team fell 58-42.

Three of the double-winners came on the boys side, where Sha White, Brady Mills and Andrew Lancaster accounted for all of the team’s six wins. White was first in the hurdles and the discus, Mills won the 1,600-meter run and the long jump and Lancaster took the 400 dash and the shot put.

Lindsey Current won both the high jump and the long jump to lead the girls team. Kelci Reed was first in the 1,600 run, Kylie Ann Kelso took the 200 dash and the Eagles were also first in the 4x100 relay.[[In-content Ad]]
