MONROEVILLE - Playing without their No. 1 middle hitter, the Patriots still put together a winning record Saturday.

Jay County High School's volleyball team opened with a 25-15, 25-18 win over Canterbury at the Heritage Invitational and closed with a 25-19, 27-29, 15-8 triumph over New Haven. In between, it lost 26-24, 25-18 to the host Patriots to go 2-1 and move to 4-5 on the season.

With senior Sarah Westgerdes sitting out because of an ankle injury, junior left side hitter Kelsey Wood pounded out eight and seven kills respectively in the wins over New Haven and Canterbury. She finished the invitational with a team-high 18.

Chelsey Grady led the defense with 24 digs, including 10 against New Haven, and followed Wood with 12 kills. Amy Alig added 10 kills.

Laura Castillo totaled 19 points and 10 digs, and Kristi Morningstar had 14 points and 11 assists. Kelci Reed added 13 digs and Kassi Hemmelgarn scored 10 points.[[In-content Ad]]
