Wood takes 1st at EJMS relays (05/08/06)

Kelsey Wood turned in the lone individual Jay County win at the East Jay Relays Saturday. Both the East Jay and West Jay middle school boys track teams added relay victories.
East Jay’s girls finished third in a five-team field with 78 points while South Adams and Adams Central tied for first with 99 apiece. The EJMS boys finished fourth out of six teams with 64 points followed by fifth-place West Jay with 46. South Adams was second with 98 points, just one back of champion Richmond.
Wood and teammate Jordan McMillan dominated the high jump for a one-two finish. Wood won at four feet, 10 inches with McMillan second at four feet, nine inches.
The West Jay team of Zac Cash, Anthony Skeens, Taylor Thompson and Dylan Huey was first in the 4x200 relay in 1-minute, 55.88 seconds. Tevan Nichols, Patrick Johnson, Brandon Brinton and Zach Somers took first place for East Jay in the distance medley with a time of 7:30.75.
The Chiefs’ Eric Caldwell and Kari Hemmelgarn each added runner-up efforts.
Caldwell took second in the boys 100 dash in 11.62, and Hemmelgarn was second in the girls 100 hurdles with a time of 18.17. Mollie May added a third-place finish in the discus at 64 feet, 11 inches.
East Jay’s girls were also second in the 800 sprint medley and third in both the 1,200 sprint medley and the 4x100 relay. The Chief boys team finished second in both the eighth grade 4x100 relay and the 4x400 relay.
The West Jay boys team was third in the seventh grade 4x100 relay, the eighth grade 4x100 relay, the eighth grade 4x200 relay and the 1,200 sprint medley.
Scoring individual wins for the South Adams girls were Hannah Moore in the 1,600 run (6:01.59) and Lauren Rich in the 100 hurdles (18.17). Heath Moser won both the shot put (41 feet, 101/4 inches) and the discus (111 feet, five inches) for the boys team.
