Would anyone want to live a perfect life? (06/23/08)
As I See It
Have you ever wondered what life would be like if it were perfect?
My definition of perfect changes daily but it usually includes maid service and never includes cooked spinach. I missed an entire noon recess one day in elementary school because I got caught stuffing the slimy concoction into my milk carton.
Sometimes I go on vacation in my mind and design a completely different life that doesn't include do-it-yourself anything. I am not a fan of the do-it-yourself craze as I figure that's why they make experts and people who do things for a living.
I enjoy writing but staring at a blank screen waiting for words to magically appear on the monitor isn't a lot of fun. It is as frustrating as deleting several paragraphs because they didn't make any sense. Other people would think that having to write a set number of words every week would be pure torture. I have news for them. Sometimes it is. But most times it is the best part of the job.
What is the best part of your job? Don't say, "nothing," because there is always something that keeps you coming back every day even if it is just the paycheck at the end of the week.
My idea of a perfect life includes a self-cleaning house. I don't have one of those yet but do I have a roof over my head so that is a start. The location of my ideal house changes a lot. I'd like to live in the mountains until I hear of a bear attack or an avalanche. Then I think, maybe not.
When it is below zero outside I'd like to live in the southern part of the United States until I read a weather report calling for temperatures in the triple digits during the summer. Then when I hear about devastating hurricanes I think there is no way I want to live anywhere near the coast. Funny, tornados don't scare me nearly as much.
I'd like to live on the farm next to the one where I grew up then I remember that long lane and how treacherous it was in the winter. I also remember how big that house was and realize I would never be able to afford to heat it. Of course, if life were perfect I could afford to heat it no matter what size it was.
That is one other thing my perfect house would have. It would have a combination of geo-thermal and solar heat. I have never seen a house like that but it sounds more economical than heating with fossil fuels only.
Along with an ideal house, which constantly changes location and configuration, my ideal life also features a changing cast of characters. Sometime I think it would be perfect to live with walking distance of both my mother and my daughter. We would probably drive each other nuts but I sure would like to try that someday.
Sometimes I people my fantasy with lots of friends and activities. In reality I would hate that. I like being by myself and not having to be with others all the time. I like having down time to unwind and not do anything.
I sigh and realize there is no such thing as a perfect life. Most of us want more money than we have but when I look at those who have that kind of money it seems they aren't any more content than the rest of us.
In reality a perfect life involves being satisfied with the circumstances we have been given. A perfect life is not about what we have but it is about who we are. It is about being happy as often as we can be and appreciating all that we have.
A maid sure would be make it easier, though. What do you think?
