Wright earns state berth, Jay places 10th (03/15/04)

Local Roundup

The amazing run for the Jay County High Rollers bowling team finally came to an end Saturday. Still, one of them will be hitting the lanes one more time.

Cody Wright became the second High Roller ever to earn a trip to the state tournament, rolling a 692 in the singles competition at the South Bend semi-state.

Jay County had a slow start as a team, and finished 10th.

Wright’s total qualified him for the state meet at the Indianapolis Western Bowl Saturday. It also made him the No. 2 seed in the semi-state tournament round.

He defeated Michael Stanifer of McCutcheon in the semifinals before falling 214-208 to Myles Rapchak of Andrean in the championship match.

Preston Shoopman also bowled in singles action for Jay County, but fell short of a state berth.

The High Rollers team run came to an end as the regional champions struggled early and never recovered.

Still, it marked the end of an outstanding team season, in which the team won its first regional title and had its best ever finish in the Hoosier Conference (second).

Behind departing seniors Jesse Shawver and Derek Powell it also defeated Huntington North for the first time, and had a top series which ranked among the 10 best in the state.

Kaup, others honored

Fort Recovery senior Joscie Kaup picked up another honor recently as she and several other Indian athletes were selected for the Northwest All-District basketball teams by The Associated Press.

Kaup was the lone Tribe player to earn first-team honors. She joined fellow Midwest Athletic Conference players Maria Moeller of Marion Local and Robyn Hoying of Minster on the first team.

Kaup, who will play volleyball at Syracuse next year, led the MAC in scoring at 16.7 points per game, and was also among the conference leaders in free throw percentage (78 percent), assists (70), steals (58) and 3-pointers.

She set a school record for 3-pointers in a season with 43.

Also selected as All-District honorable mention players were Holly Stein and Jenn Stahl from the girls team, and Dusty Tobe from the boys team.

Stein, a freshman, will be shooting for Kaup’s 3-point record as she finished her first year with 37 long balls. She led the MAC with a 45 percent mark from behind the arc.

She averaged 9.8 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, and had 45 steals and 35 assists this season.

Stahl averaged 7.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game during her senior season. She was near perfect from the foul line, going 15-of-16 on the year.

Tobe, a junior, averaged 12.5 points and 5.0 per game and was among the best in the conference as he shot 77 percent from the free-throw line. He also had 40 assists and 25 steals.

Jay AAU teams win

Jay County’s AAU boys basketball teams had a successful weekend as both the sixth and seventh grade squads won tournaments.

The seventh grade team won the 3A/4A Indiana Basketball Association regional qualifier. The sixth grade team too the title at the eight-team Winchester tournament.

Jay County’s seventh graders made their way to the regional championship with wins over Selma, Portage and Crown Pointe. They defeated NorthWood in the tournament finale to earn a trip to the IBA state finals at Spiece Fieldhouse in Fort Wayne April 24-25.

The sixth grade team just got by Delta to win its tournament title by a 36-35 score. In other tournament games Jay defeated Knightstown 30-22, Northeastern 32-12 and Winchester 52-11.[[In-content Ad]]
