Youth leads Patriot girls over Mississinewa (04/19/05)

GAS CITY — Jay County’s girls track team won every event, including five sweeps, Monday to dominate the Mississinewa Indians 107-12. The boys team swept one event, but picked up just four victories overall in a 65-58 defeat.
A couple of freshmen and a sophomore were the big winners for the Patriots, with Erika Hunt winning three events and Amanda Johnson and Sara Garringer each adding two victories.
Hunt, a freshman, powered sweeps in both hurdle events. She was first in front of Kelli Whitenack and Stephanie Wellman in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.5 seconds, and won the 300 hurdles in 55.4 ahead of Wellman and Shannon O’Dell.
She picked up another win in the high jump at four feet, 10 inches with Jessica Mosier following in second.
Hunt also teamed with Jessica Heitkamp, Jill Roughia and Nicole Pfeifer to win the 4x400 relay in 4-minutes, 36 seconds.
Amanda Johnson, another freshman, headed up an all-freshman sweep of the 400 run for the Patriots. She was first in 1:05 with Tequila Guntle second and Lexie Easton third.
Johnson captured the 1,600 run victory as well in 5:57 with Mosier in second. She teamed with Roughia, Jessica Mosier and Alyssa Johnson to win the 4x800 relay in 10:43.
Garringer, a sophomore, dominated the throwing events. She was first at 28 feet, 113/4 inches ahead of teammates Lacey Thornburg and Jennifer McKinley in the shot put, and won the discus at 82 feet, 11 inches.
Lindsey Vesperry took the final field event win for Jay County in the long jump by less than an inch at 13 feet, 63/4 inches.
Sara Mescher and Heitkamp took care of the 100 and 200 dashes, winning in times of 13.6 and 28.3 respectively. Mescher was second to Heitkamp in the 200.
Mescher, Heitkamp, Pfeifer and Brittany O’Dell added the third relay win in the 4x100 in 55 seconds.
Roughia paced the other Patriot sweep in the 800 run in 2:34. Rose Weaver was second, and Paige Klinger placed third.
Alyssa Johnson won the 3,200 run in 12:24.
Freshman Chris Moore earned half of the wins for the Jay County boys. He was first ahead of teammate Doug Murray in the 800 run in 2:16.7, and won the 1,600 run by six seconds in 5:09.
Senior Mark Kelly led the sweep of the high jump by the Patriot boys. He cleared the bar at six feet, with Clint Muhlenkamp second and Sean Hatzell third.
Joseph Vormohr grabbed the other Jay County victory in the shot put at 47 feet, 61/4 inches.[[In-content Ad]]
