Capsule Reports

Deer struck
A Portland woman and Keystone woman were involved in deer accidents Wednesday in Jay County.
Paula Sibery, 46, 1198 W. 150 South, Portland, told Portland Police Department she was driving northeast on Blaine Pike near Third Street when a deer ran into the driver’s side of her 2007 Jeep Commander Sport.
Damage in the 6:25 p.m. accident was estimated to be between $2,500 and $5,000.
Teresa Simmons, 50, 1563 W. 1200 South, Keystone, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she was traveling south on Ind. 1 near Ind. 18 when a deer ran into the road. She was unable to avoid hitting the animal with her 2008 Ford.
Damage in the 7:30 a.m. accident was estimated to be between $1,000 and $2,500.

Jackknifed semi
A Beavercreek, Ohio, man was involved in an accident Wednesday in Pike Township.
Charles Lackings, 50, 2948 Sassafras Lane, Beavercreek, Ohio, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was traveling north on U.S. 27 near county road 700 South when he began to lose control of the 2007 semi trailer he was driving because of ice on the road. The semi slid into a ditch on the east side of the road and the trailer came to a rest in the road.
The semi is registered to Hoc Transport Company, 1569 Industrial Parkway, Akron, Ohio.
Damage in the 6:02 p.m. accident was estimated to be between $2,500 and $5,000.

Rear end collision
A Portland woman was involved in an accident Wednesday with a Jay County Sheriff’s Office vehicle in Pike Township.
Mariana Hurtado Gutierrez, 20, 119 E. Elder St., told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she was traveling north on U.S. 27 near county road 700 South when she saw a parked sheriff’s car with its emergency lights on. She began to slow the 1991 Nissan Altima she was driving down but was unable to stop because of ice on the roadway.
The Altima struck the 2013 Chevrolet Impala, which is registered to Jay County Commissioners, 120 N. Court St., Portland.
The sheriff’s car was stopped while sheriff’s deputies assisted with another accident.
The Altima is registered to Juan Hurtado Gutierrez, 316 ½ N. Meridian St., Portland.
Damage in the 8:16 p.m. accident was estimated to be between $2,500 and $5,000.

Two-car collision
A Berkley, Mich., woman and a Ridgeville man were involved in an accident Wednesday in Pike Township.
Kelsi Craig, 22, 2739 Gardner Ave., told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she was traveling south on U.S. 27 near county road 800 South when her vehicle hit a patch of ice that caused her to lose control of the car.

The 2004 Chevrolet Malibu Craig was driving spun around and struck a 1999 Chevrolet Malibu, which was traveling north on U.S. 27.
The collision caused the 1999 Malibu to go off the road into a ditch.
Jonathan Winner, 43, 8942 W. 200 East, Ridgeville, was driving the 1999 Malibu.
The 2004 Chevrolet Malibu is registered to Douglas Rezanka, 2739 Gardner Ave., Berkley, Mich.
Damage in the 8:50 p.m. accident was estimated to be between $5,000 and $10,000.

Intersection collision
A Portland man and Fort Recovery man were involved in an accident Wednesday morning in Portland.
Ryan Holcomb, 21, 1542 E. 100 South, Portland, told Portland Police Department he was stopped at the stop sign on Wayne Street at Water Street. He didn’t see any vehicles and proceeded north into the intersection where the 2000 Ford F250 he was driving collided with a 1999 Toyota Rav 4, which was traveling east on Water Street.
Michael McCartney, 55, 1932 State Line Road, Fort Recovery, was driving the Rav 4.
The Ford F250 is registered to Rhea and David Holcomb, same address.
Damage in the 11:20 a.m. accident was estimated to be between $1,000 and $2,500.

Combine accident
A Berne man was involved in an accident Wednesday morning in Bearcreek Township.
Matthew Adams, 30, 3790 E. Ind. 218, Berne, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was traveling west on county road 650 North near county road 50 West when his combine crested a hill and slid on ice.
The 2007 John Deere went off the south side of the road and struck a utility pole.
Damage to the combine and pole, which is owned by Jay County REMC, was estimated to be between $1,000 and $2,500.

In area courts
Two area men were sentenced recently in Adams County Superior court.
Larry Newland, Portland, pleaded guilty to invasion of privacy, a Class A misdemeanor, and was sentenced to one year in jail, with all suspended. He was placed on probation for one year and ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.
Russell Galloway, Geneva, pleaded guilty to invasion of privacy, a Class A misdemeanor, and was sentenced to one year in jail, with all suspended. He was placed on probation for one year and ordered to undergo counseling and complete 40 hours of community service.
In Celina Municipal Court, multiple local residents were fined for traffic violations, including Sheryl Hudson, 48, Portland, speeding, $25; Daniel Schmackers, 30, Fort Recovery, speeding, $25; Kathleen Will, 53, Fort Recovery, speeding, $25; and Lester Dirksen, 65, Portland, failure to wear a seatbelt, $30.
