Five Patriots named to ACAC teams

Nearly a half-dozen Jay County High School football players were awarded for their efforts on the gridiron this season.
Jon Blankenship and Hunter Prescott led a contingent of five Patriots to earn All-Allen County Athletic Conference honors.
South Adams had seven earn the conference recognition.
Blankenship and Prescott, both seniors, were named to the first team as a defensive end and outside linebacker respectively for the Patriots (2-8).
Junior Mario Rodriguez (defensive end), sophomore Caleb Kunkle (linebacker) and freshman Cole Stigleman (running back) were given the nod for the second-team.
Stigleman (767 yards and six touchdowns on 107 carries) was the only freshman to make the list, and Kunkle was one of three sophomores.
For the regional champion Starfires (7-7), seniors Derek Wanner (quarterback), Conner Sealscott (defensive line) and Kyle Cox (wide receiver) earned first-team honors along with junior Drew LeFever (linebacker).
Named to the second team were Isaiah Amstutz (running back), Brandon Dailey (lineman) and Logan Stoner (lineman).

Big 2nd lifts Stars
BERNE — The Broncos stayed close with the Starfires in the opening period.
South Adams pulled away in the second.
Five 3-pointers sparked a 37-point outburst in the second quarter Monday as the South Adams girls basketball team beat Daleville, 74-30.
Sydney Willis led all players with 22 points for consecutive games with more than 20. Cindy In’t Groen had a career high 20 points in the blowout. Mackenzie Jennings chipped in with 11 points, and Lexi Dellinger had eight.
Madison Savage had 10 points to lead the scoring effort for Daleville (0-3).
The Starfires (2-1) had 10 different players score points.
South Adams’ junior varsity squad also beat the Broncos, 45-17.

SA tops Marion
MARION — Three South Adams swimmers won dual events as the Starfires defeated Marion on Monday, 127-43.
Cady Farlow took first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 11.62 seconds. She also won the 200 freestyle in 2:05.63.
Ashton Klopp earned the top spot in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly, and her sister Brette earned victories in both the 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle.
Mayia Curtis touched the wall in 6:33.26 to win the 500 freestyle, and Korinna Schindler was uncontested in diving.
Claire Sutton was second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:15.4, behind Marion’s Samantha Diedrich, who touched the wall in 1:00.54.
South Adams (2-1) also won all three relay events.

JC freshmen win
Jay County’s freshman boys basketball team opened its season with a 39-31 victory over the Delta Eagles on Monday.
Holton Hill led the Patriots with 19 points, and Garrett Rodgers chipped in with nine points.
Connor Davis and Jordan Stultz added six and five points respectively.

Chiefs move to 3-0
UNION CITY — Two players reached double figures Monday as the East Jay Middle School eighth grade girls basketball team beat host West Side, 50-15.
The EJMS seventh graders fell 35-4.
Hanna Dillon and Kendra Muhlenkamp had 16 and 11 points respectively for the Chief eighth graders. Klarissa Hemmelgarn tallied six points and Gwen Omstead, Hannah Phillips and Sammie Twigg all notched five points. Clare Dirksen had two points.
For the East Jay seventh graders, Taylor May and Mackynzie Fairchild each had two points.
The eighth graders improve to 3-0 on the season, and the seventh graders fell to 1-2.

WJ boys fall
DUNKIRK — West Jay’s seventh grade boys basketball team fell to 0-2 on the season with a 26-13 loss to Blackford on Monday.
Trevon Vore led the Eagles’ effort with seven points and eight rebounds. Storm McLaughlin and Peyton Nichols each had two points and a pair of rebounds, and Dylan Bowler tallied two points and three rebounds.
