Jay Co. falls in season finale

DECATUR — The Jay County High School volleyball team rallied, but fell short Thursday in its season finale against the host Squaws.
Bellmont, the sixth-ranked team in Class 3A, defeated the Patriots 25-18, 25-15, 24-26, 25-21.
Sophomore Abby Barcus tallied a team-high 16 kills to go with her 12 digs and two aces. Juniors Kylie Osborne and Abby Wendel followed with 12 and nine kills respectively.
Lizzy Schoenlien, a sophomore, and Wendel both recorded 14 digs to lead the Patriot defense, and Schoenlein had 32 assists.
The Patriot junior varsity team also lost to the Squaws, 25-20, 25-24.
Britlyn Dues notched six kills, Abby Muhlenkamp totaled five digs and Kaelyn Weaver had a pair of blocks.
Jay County (23-7) opens sectional play against Homestead at 6 p.m. Thursday at Fort Wayne South Side.
Flyers top Tribe
MARIA STEIN, Ohio — Clayton Pearson tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the Fort Recovery Middle School eighth grade football team’s 22-12 loss to the host Marion Local Flyers on Thursday.
The seventh grade Indians also lost, 14-12.
Pearson connected with Robby LeFevre for 40 yards and found Payton Jutte for a 30-yard score.
Derek Siefring, Cody Shinaberry, Jackson Ontrop and Pearson all recovered fumbles for the Tribe.
For the FRMS seventh graders, Riley Pearson scored on a 52-yard pass from Garrett Faller. And Cole Grisez scooped up a fumble and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown.
