Center's future discussed
South Adams School Board
BERNE — South Adams School Board is contemplating the future of the high school’s wellness center.
Picking up a discussion from last month’s meeting, board members heard a report Tuesday from South Adams High School principal Trent Lehman about the wellness center, a fitness facility that is available for public use.
Lehman told the board that use of the wellness center has dropped and there are six regular users. He noted that the facility will not be able to sustain itself at that rate.
Board members Arlene Amstutz, John Mann, Julie Mansfield, John Buckingham, Ray Gill and Landon Patterson, with Amy Orr absent, discussed possibilities for the wellness center, from extending hours in order to try to draw more members to closing its doors.
They asked Lehman to survey residents about options and tabled the issue until their Oct. 14 meeting.
In other business, the board:
•Congratulated science teacher Michael Baer on being named AdvancEd Teacher of The Year. In addition to his teaching duties, Baer leads the Dots in Blue Water program and has been involved in Habitat for Humanity.
•Heard a presentation from teacher Ashley Fosnaugh and middle school students about their June trip to Washington, D.C. It was the first time the school had organized such a trip in about a decade.
•Approved an agreement with Lisa Wanner for mental health counseling services.
•Learned form director of building and maintenance Dave Vorhees that bids for the addition of a wash bay at the bus garage will be due Oct. 7. The board is expected to review bids at its Oct. 14 meeting.
•Approved a pass-through agreement with Adams County Community Foundation. The agreement will allow donations for school athletic projects to be tax exempt because ACCF is a charitable entity. Litwiller made an initial donation to the fund.
•OK’d the school’s driver’s education program with a fee of $320 for South Adams students and $380 for non-South Adams students.
•Approved transfers of Amy Yoder and Vickie VonGunten (second grade 19-hour Title I aides); hired David Daniels (Migrant Field Specialist), Michael Baer (high school mandatory study table tutor), Holly Neuenschwander and Angie Bluhm (19-hour kindergarten Title I aides), Margie Dobler and Jane Miller (high school tutors), Diane McClung, Emily Cook, Alissa McMillan, Morgan Mitchell and Amy Company (Migrant Education Resource Center tutors).
•Approved an overnight/out-of-state field trip request for students to travel to Louisville, Ky., for the National FFA Convention Oct. 28 through 31.
