Mom's care is in doctors' hands

As I See It

By Diana Dolecki-

What a week. It started off well and went quickly downhill.
I had to give a presentation to a local garden club and was filled with worry and apprehension that I would mess it up even though I had spent weeks researching and preparing. I scouted out the location ahead of time. I have a history of getting lost whenever I go to a new place and didn’t want that to happen.
The weather was perfect on the appointed day. I found a parking place and promptly stepped on my sunglasses as I was getting out of the car. They were shattered. My heart sank as I worried that was an omen of what was to come.
Another lady parked in front of me. I waited for her as I reasoned that she would know where she was going and I could follow her. She turned out to be very nice and we walked in together. The backyard we entered was fancier than any I will ever own.
The presentation went well and I don’t think many of them noticed me jamming my shaking hand into the bench I was leaning against. They asked a lot of good questions and wondered if I would write about them.
After it was all over, I left and wore my husband’s sunglasses on the way home. I mistakenly thought the rest of the week would go well. I planned to start cleaning house. I wanted to clear spaces so I could begin bringing in the houseplants that had spent their summer vacation outside. Plus I wanted to put up some insulation upstairs in continuation of our never-ending remodeling. There are flowerbeds that need weeding and as everybody knows, regular housework never ends.
Wednesday a storm front was moving in and I woke up with a sinus headache, upset tummy and aching all over. I was immensely grateful that I didn’t have to go to work. I drove my husband to physical therapy and slept in the car while they did their thing. He woke me up and we went home.
I slept the rest of the day. Thursday was blessedly calm.
Friday I worked on insulation and found that putting the stuff in the ceiling is not all that easy. I got a few pieces up but not nearly enough. Friday evening I received a call from my brother, David. He sounded awful as he told me that our mother was in Richmond.
She had fallen earlier in the day. Thank God for her button. She had pushed it and David followed the emergency squad to the house.
They took her to the hospital. David and his wife were waiting to find out what they were going to do. The doctors decided to keep her overnight and we would know more the following day.
I tossed and turned and worried all night. The next morning I loaded up some old computers and dropped them off at the local recyclers on my way to the hospital.
She told me she had been watering her bird when she got dizzy. The next thing she knew she was on the floor and couldn’t get up. She seemed in pretty good shape and wasn’t in much pain.
Later on the doctor told us she had had a heart attack. They also told us that the dizziness might never go away completely. He didn’t have the results back from the test they had done on her knee. It was bruised pretty bad and there was some concern that it might be broken.
The physical therapist came in later and had her walk down the hall, which she did without complaining of pain. I’m guessing her knee isn’t broken, but no one has said for sure.
She spent another night in the hospital. I am on my way down there soon to find out what happens next.
It almost seemed like they were going to send her home in a day or so.
The doctor just called. She can go home tomorrow. By herself. I am worried as I can’t stay with her for the first few days but if the people with medical degrees say she will be fine I have to trust them.
My sister-in-law just posted a message, ”I made all of this out of nothing. Trust me, I can take care of you. God” It seems very appropriate today. I must trust that things will turn out as they should.
