Walk was filled with sunshine

As I See It

By Diana Dolecki-

It was such a pretty day Saturday. I had attended a workshop about rain gardens at Minnetrista a couple weeks ago. At the conclusion of the presentation we all helped plant a rain garden across from where they hold the farmer’s market. Saturday, I stopped by to see how it was doing.
Most of the plants were doing well. A few looked like they were struggling, but that could be because it is the time of year when the above ground portions normally die back. I look forward to seeing the area in the spring.
After I circled the market a couple times, filling my cloth bag with goodies, I stepped into the prairie garden on the other side of the parking lot. I inhaled the aroma of fall and felt the tall grasses caress me with their soothing rustling. I lingered a few moments to restore my soul.
I made several other stops on my way back home. It felt good to take a break from worrying.
After putting my purchases away, I stopped by the hospital to see my mom. I told her about my youngest grandson, Nicky. The last picture I saw of him, he had a pearl handled pistol stuck in his pants. It is his new, constant accessory. He loves being a superhero and the toy gun helps him vanquish the bad guys.
Grandson Jacob is getting used to kindergarten. He was slapped in the face by another boy but opted to not inform the teacher. The next day he told the kid who was boss — Jacob. So the incident was settled without the use of further violence or adult intervention.

Mom told me her grandson, Jadyn, had visited her the day before. He brought a cousin or two with him and they all played cards. She was so tickled that he had taken the time to visit.
The nurse took her for a walk in the hall then asked if I wanted to take her outside. I had not known that was even an option. We bundled her up in a wheelchair and off we went.
We circled the front of the hospital where I was grateful to whoever planted the sweet-smelling roses along the sidewalk. Then we headed out to the community garden. Many of the plots had given their all and boasted an abundance of foxtails. A few zinnias and marigolds brightened up the area.
We continued along the path and I showed her what there was to see. By this time I was trying to figure out how the entire path could be uphill! We stopped by a fountain and chatted a bit before I took her back inside. It was a nice diversion from sitting in her room trying to make conversation.
I am hoping that she is released soon. The nurses tell me that her leg is healing as it should. We have a doctor’s appointment on Tuesday so maybe we will know more then.
I think we all need a little bit of sunshine. The weather has been so beautiful that it seems a shame to spend it inside. When we feel the sun on our shoulders it is like getting a hug from the universe. And we all need a hug sometimes.
