Willis, Stars finish 13th

KENDALVILLE — The Starfires played the best golf they had as a team all season.
But it wasn’t enough to advance from regional.
South Adams’ girls golf team took three strokes off its sectional score, shooting a 362 on Saturday in the East Noble regional tournament at Cobblestone Golf Course.
The Starfires placed 13th out of 18 teams.
Sydney Willis, a 2013 state qualifier, turned a 79 as the top score for the Starfires. Her 7-over-par effort, which included one birdie, nine pars and five bogeys, was two strokes off Penn’s Cassidy Jurkaites for the final regional qualifying spot.
Playing in their final events as Starfires, Kelli Lehman and Alleigh Wingler followed Willis with a 93 and 94 respectively.
Jaci Gorrell turned in the No. 4 score with a 96, and Amy Schwartz had a 99.

Jay girls sixth
MUNCIE — Competing with a full squad for just the third time this season, the Jay County girls cross country team finished in sixth place Saturday in the Delta Invitational.
The Jay County boys team was 12th.
Kellie Fortkamp led the Patriot girls, crossing the finish line in third place with a time of 20 minutes, 30.33 seconds. Megan Wellman was 16th, Erika Kunkler placed 34th, Gabby Kunkler finished 39th and Kay Morgan was 60th. Ashley Alig (61st) also ran for Jay County.
For the boys, Tanner Craw’s time of 17:52.82 was good enough for 32nd. Michael Denney and Alex LeMaster finished in 51st and 58th respectively, with Travis Barton placing 64th and Matthew Cox was 75th.

Also running were Dustin Cope (80th) and Dustin Bricker (81st).
In the junior varsity race, Dylan Harris was 38th, Sayger Holcomb finished 57th and Jacob Nichols placed 67th.

FR 1-2 at invite
CONVOY, Ohio — The Fort Recovery volleyball team went 1-2 on Saturday at the Crestview Invitational.
The Indians lost to Norwalk St. Paul 26-24, 25-16, before beating Old Fort 25-17, 26-25 in their second match. Then, the Tribe (7-11) fell to Marion Local 25-18, 25-18 to finish sixth in the eight-team tournament.
Kendra Siefring notched 23 kills and 20 digs for the tournament. Cassidy Rammel had 39 assists, and Rachel Pugh and Madi Grover tallied 38 and 27 digs respectively.

Star runners third
CULVER — Olivia Von Gunten led the South Adams girls cross country team to a third-place finish Saturday in the open division of the Culver Invitational.
The South Adams boys squad competed in the elite division and finished in 19th.
Von Gunten crossed the finish line in third place with a time of 20 minutes. Aleesha Goodwin placed 23rd, Kara Seffernick was 36th, Katelin Hawbaker finished 59th and Hadi Hawbaker was 76th.
Bailey McIntire crossed the finish line in 17th to lead the Starfire boys. Following McIntire were Sawyer Miller (58th), David Steffen (140th), Briar Goodwin (171st) and Cole Litwiller (175th).
