South Adams routs Canterbury

FORT WAYNE — The South Adams High School softball team dismantled the Canterbury Cavaliers on Wednesday in a 19-0 victory.
The Starfires (2-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, and added two more in the second before putting up a half dozen in the third. After failing to score in the fourth, South Adams put up another crooked number in the fifth, scoring eight runs for the lopsided victory.
Maddie Morgan led the Starfires with three hits, including a home run, while driving in three runs. Alaina Johnston and Loren Sparks each had a trio of hits, with Sparks a home run shy of the cycle. Johnston also added three stolen bases.
Lauren Smith and Morgan Alberson had two hits apiece, with Alberson hitting a triple and driving in a team-high for RBIs.
 Karleigh Whetsel picked up the win pitching for South Adams, scattering eight hits over five innings while walking three and striking out three.

Vikings top SA

BERNE — Errors proved to be costly for the South Adams junior varsity baseball team on Wednesday in a 6-2 loss to the Huntington North Vikings.
Huntington North scored one run in the first inning, added three more in the third and one in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. It pushed its advantage to 6-0 in the top of the sixth before the Starfires broke the shutout in the bottom of the frame.
South Adams committed four errors, and four of the Vikings’ six runs were unearned.
Isaiah Baumgartner had an RBI double to lead the Starfire offense. Austin Gerber, Terry Dawn and Joe Stuber each added hits for the home team.
Gerber took the loss on the mound, giving up five runs (two earned) on five hits. He walked three and struck out one in five innings.
