Softball claims tourney crown

Jay Co. roundup

RICHMOND — For the second consecutive season, the Jay County High School softball team is champion of the Richmond Invitational.
Jay County defeated the host Red Devils 3-1 in the tournament opener Saturday, then disposed of the Centerville Bulldogs 4-3 in a nine-inning affair.
With the two victories, Jay County (6-5) moves above .500 for the first time this season.
In the title game, senior Catherine Dunn drove in Larissa Boles in the bottom of the seventh inning, and classmate Courtney Finnerty notched the tournament-clinching hit in the bottom of the ninth to score Catera Gierhart from third for the game-winning run.
Dunn paced the Patriots with five hits and three RBIs on the day. Chloe Trissel and Gierhart both had multi-hit games — the first of their careers — against Centerville.
Boles recorded both wins pitching for Jay County. She scattered six hits and struck out five against Richmond, and then didn’t allow a hit in 4 2/3 innings of relief of McKayla Norris, who gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Patriots earn split
CENTERVILLE — Jay County’s baseball team split a doubleheader with the Class 2A No. 8 Centerville Bulldogs on Saturday.
The Patriots defeated the Bulldogs 5-3 in game one behind the pitching of Jake Myers, and gave up all six runs in the first two innings in a 6-3 loss in the second game.
Myers, a sophomore, tallied a career-high 13 strikeouts, allowing one earned run while scattering three hits and walking five in the complete-game effort.
Levi Stant reached base three times, scoring once and driving in one run. Levi Long added a two-run double in game one, and Cole Stigleman also had an RBI.
Jay County (5-4) got an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning in game two thanks to an RBI single by Stigleman to drive in Long. But Centerville (6-3) answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a lead it would not give up.
Ethan Myers took the loss in game two, allowing all six runs while striking out four and walking four.

Heitkamp inching
FORT WAYNE — Nathan Heitkamp is chasing the Jay County school long jump record.
He inched closer Saturday at the North Side Relays in Fort Wayne.
Heitkamp set a new career-best, jumping 21 feet, 1.25 inches to place third. His previous best was 20 feet, 10 inches, which he set at sectional last season. The JCHS record is 21 feet, 10.5 inches.
The junior scored six of the Patriots’ 11 points, as they finished last out of 17 teams. Carroll won the meet with 159 points, Northrop finished second with 138.33 and North Central was third with 108.33.
Jay County’s 4x200-meter relay team of Ian Bentz, Kyle Blankenship, Alec Burcham and Alex Lewis finished sixth in 1 minute, 43.66 seconds.
Dallas Dudelston, Tanner Craw, Tyler Leonhard joined Travis Barton to place eighth in the 4x400 relay, and the trio teamed with Alex LeMaster in the 4x800 to finish in 9:28.41.
