Jay Co. beats No. 1 Lions
LEO — After a slow start, the Jay County High School softball team has won eight of its last nine games.
The latest victims were the defending Class 3A state champions and top-ranked Leo Lions.
Randi Auker drove in Gabby Hart from third base in the top of the seventh inning Tuesday as the Patriots defeated defending Allen County Athletic Conference champion Leo, 3-2.
Hart led off the seventh with a double, and moved to third on a groundout by Kaili Baughman to set up Auker’s game winning hit.
Jay County (9-5, 2-0 ACAC) scored in the top of the second on an RBI double by Hart. The Patriots took a 2-0 lead in the third when Auker scored from third on a double steal with Chloe Steigerwalt.
Leo tied the game with a pair of runs in the third inning, and both teams were scoreless until Jay County took the lead for good.
Hart and Auker both had two hits, an RBI and a run. Catherine Dunn, Larissa Boles and Steigerwalt each had singles.
Boles notched her eighth win of the season, scattering six hits and striking out five while giving up two unearned runs.
