South Adams netters top Tigers

BERNE — The Starfires are making a run at a conference championship.
South Adams High School’s girls tennis team moved to 3-0 in the Allen County Athletic Conference on Tuesday with a 4-1 win over Bluffton.
Starfire junior Brittany Potts defeated Molly Williams 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Maddie Graber beat Lauren Stauffer at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-0, and Kara Seffernick won 7-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles against Madison Meyer.
At No. 1 doubles, Riley Liechty and Kylea Pierce defeated Sara Baumgartner and Claudia Williams 7-5, 7-5. MaJena Gerber and Autumn Von Gunten lost to Lexi Ramseyer and Madison Heller at No. 2 doubles, 7-6, 6-4.
South Adams’ junior varsity squad also won, 7-1. Treva Clingenpeel and Riley Thompson both won their singles matches. The Starfires got doubles wins from Avery Yoder and Fatima Sandoval, Julia Grabau and Sydney Pierce, Mallorie Hough and Lara Schwartz, Erika Badertscher and Cassie Yoder, and Haley Gerber and Breanna Potts.

Stars swept
MONROEVILLE — The South Adams softball team dropped a pair of games to ACAC rival Heritage on Tuesday.
South Adams (8-6, 0-2 ACAC) lost 8-5 in game one, and couldn’t hang on in the second game, losing 10-9. Only the first game counted as a conference tilt.

Heritage started strong in both games, scoring three runs in each of the first two innings. South Adams nabbed a 9-8 lead in the top of the sixth inning of game two, but a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame gave Heritage the victory.
The Patriots scored all eight runs of the game one in the first three innings. South Adams scored a pair of runs late, but couldn’t complete the rally. 
Alaina Johnston tallied five hits and scored five runs between both games. Keirstyn Grimm also notched five hits, and Loren Sparks, Morgan Alberson and Cindy In’t Groen each added three.

Saalfrank perfect
MONROEVILLE — Andrew Saalfrank took matters into his own hands on Tuesday against South Adams.
The Heritage southpaw struck out 13 of the 15 batters he faced in a five-inning perfect game against the South Adams baseball team. Heritage won 10-0.
At the plate, Saalfrank did most of the work himself as well, driving in four runs on a double and a single.
Heritage scored two runs in the second before tacking on four runs each in the third and fourth innings.
Austin Conrad, Matthew Gibson and William Lomow each had two hits for the Patriots.
Jayden Dull took the loss for South Adams, giving up nine runs — seven earned — on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out four.

Tribe girls third
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s girls track team scored 38 points to finish in third place on Tuesday.
Anna won with 115 points. Fort Loramie (78) was second, and New Knoxville was fourth with nine points.
Anna and Fort Loramie finished one-two in the boys meet as well. Anna scored 142 points and Fort Loramie tallied 41. New Knoxville scored 33 for third, and Fort Recovery was fourth with 19.
Lauren Gehle, Brittany Jutte, Emily May and Kiah Wendel teamed up in the 4x100 relay for Fort Recovery’s only victory.
Caitlyn Huelskamp (1,600 run) and Angela Heitkamp (400 dash) both earned third-place finishes.
Cole Hull was second in the 100 dash and long jump to lead the Tribe boys.
