Patriots outlast Argylls in five

FAIRMOUNT — The Patriots needed every bit of five games to dispose of the Argylls.
After falling behind two games to one Tuesday, the Jay County High School volleyball team rallied to win the final two in a victory over Madison-Grant.
The Patriots defeated the Argylls, who were 11th in Class 2A in the preseason coaches’ poll voting, 25-18, 19-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-10.
Senior Ava Kunkler paced the offense for Jay County (2-0) with 19 kills. She also had three digs, 2 1/2 blocks and one ace. Abby Barcus tallied 14 kills and a team-high four aces. She also had 10 digs, sharing the team high with Abby Wendel.
Britlyn Dues recorded six kills to go with her four digs and three aces. Kylie Osborne and Kaelyn Weaver both had five kills, and Osborne also tallied five digs.
Lizzy Schoenlein had 41 assists, two kills and one block.
The Patriots host Class 3A No. 4 Delta at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Jay gets first win
Jay County’s girls golf team picked up its first win of the season, defeating the Union (Modoc) Rockets 221-272 on Tuesday at Portland Golf Club.
Brooke Sanders earned match medalist honors by shooting a season-best 50 from the No. 3 spot. Rachel Antrim’s 53 was the Patriots’ No. 2 score, and Kendra Dodd and Cassie Reno — the junior made her varsity debut — both shot 59 to complete the Patriots’ team total.
Sydney Robbins also competed, and she finished with a 62.
Jay County is now 1-2 on the season.
Trisha Cole led the Rockets with a 65.

Bruns medals
MINSTER, Ohio — Chase Bruns shot a career-best 36 to earn match medalist Tuesday in the Fort Recovery boys golf team’s 168-178 loss to the Fort Loramie Redskins at Arrowhead Golf Club.
Bruns’ 1-over par earned him his third medalist honor of the season, and it beat his previous career-best of 38 he set as a sophomore.
Jackson Hobbs was second for the Indians (4-3) with a 44.
Austin Faller shot a 47, also a career best, and Colt Grieshop totaled 51 to round out the Tribe’s team score.

Stars win opener
BERNE — The Starfires dominated the singles matches. It was enough to give them a season-opening victory Tuesday.
The South Adams boys tennis team swept all three singles contests in a 3-2 victory against the Winchester Golden Falcons.
Starfire sophomore David Muselman beat Arick Miller at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-4.
At No. 2 singles, senior Dexter Miller only lost one game to Austin Bogue in a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Marcus Teeter defeated Aaron Wallace at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
Winchester’s Mason Melton and Trey Graft beat Zach Teeple and Jaison Kistler at No. 1 doubles 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Drake Moody and Michael Georgi of Winchester won by forfeit.
The Golden Falcons’ Hagan Lawson defeated Paul Stuckey 8-1 in the only junior varsity match.

Willis medals, again
GENEVA — Sydney Willis is 3-for-3 in earning match medalist.
The South Adams senior shot a 3-over-par 39 on Tuesday, helping the Starfire girls golf team to a 195-213 victory against the Bishop Luers Knights at Golf Club of the Limberlost.
Willis made birdie on the par-4 fourth and par-4 seventh holes, and converted par three times. She also bogeyed three holes after opening her round with a double bogey on the par-4 first.
Jaci Gorrell shot even on both par-3s on her way to a 46. Amy Schwartz and Kaiti Gorrell had a 53 and 57 respectively for the Starfires.
Becah Schwartz finished with a 65.
Katie Leija led the Knights with a 48.

Boys shut out
MUNCIE — Jay County’s boys soccer team was shut out Tuesday in a 2-0 loss to the Muncie Central Bearcats.
Central scored once in the first half on a goal by Chase Clasby. The Bearcats (1-0) added another in the second thanks to Clark Bailey.
Jay County (0-1) hosts Heritage at 6 p.m. Thursday.
