Starfire soccer sweeps boys-girls doubleheader

HARTFORD CITY — The Starfire boys won their first game of the season Saturday.
The girls squad was victorious for the second time in as many games.
The South Adams High School boys and girls soccer teams defeated the Blackford Bruins in a doubleheader Saturday.
The SAHS girls won 4-1, and the boys shut out the Bruins 5-0.
Blackford’s girls squad scored nearly 10 minutes into the second half to tie the score at 1-1. Two minutes later, Lexi Dellinger scored the first of her three goals — all three came in fewer than three minutes — to give the Starfires (2-1) the victory.
Jordan Weaver scored the other goal.
Chance Sprunger and Brian O’Donnell both had two goals to lead the SAHS boys. David Guzman also had a goal and three assists for South Adams (1-0).
Cole Myers and O’Donnell also had assists, and Tyler Sprunger had five saves in the shutout.

SA spikers 3-1
DENVER — The South Adams volleyball team was 3-1 Saturday to win the Silver Pool of the North Miami Invitational.
The Starfires (5-1) defeated the Eastbrook Panthers 25-17, 25-11 before falling to the Rochester Zebras 25-19, 25-21. South Adams then defeated the host Warriors 25-11, 25-16 and topped the Northwestern Tigers by a score of 25-13, 25-9.
Morgan Alberson and Madeline Wurster both had 19 kills for the tournament to lead South Adams, which also got 15 kills apiece from Kylie Grabau and Cindy In’t Groen. Addie Wanner chipped in with a dozen kills as well.
Kylea Pierce had a team high 21 digs, with Emma Rosswrum and Julia Grabau adding 14 apiece. Caralie Farlow also had 13 digs.

Star netters win
FORT WAYNE — South Adams’ boys tennis team went 2-0 Saturday at the Wayne/South Side Invitational at Sweeney Park.
The Starfires (3-1) shut out Blackhawk Christian 5-0 in the first round, then defeated Bishop Luers 4-1 in the second.
All three singles players — David Villarroel, David Muselman and Dexter Miller — were 2-0, and each won in straight sets as well. ]
Villarroel beat Fared Fiedler of Blackhawk Christian at No. 1 singles 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), then knocked off Bishop Luers’ Cole Schieble 6-0, 6-1. Muselman defeated BCHS’ Drew Hall 6-3, 6-2 before beating Johnny Woehnker of Luers 6-0, 6-3. Miller won both his matches 6-0, 6-2, first against Ethan Yourdon of Blackhawk and then Luers’ Ben Forte.
The Stafires’ No. 2 doubles team of Zach Teeple and Jamison Kistler were also 2-0 on the day. They beat Bailey Brouwer and Spencer Lee of Blackhawk 6-4, 6-3 then defeated Luers’ Maximilian Pyle and Ben Blomeke 3-6, 6-1 (10-8).
South Adams’ No. 1 doubles tandem of Marcus Teeter and Kam DeLong beat BCHS’ Graham Ginagy and Joseph Angelo 6-4, 6-2 before falling to Ethan Brown and Charlie Burton 4-6, 6-4 (10-3).
