Patriots halt skid with 6-2 road victory

WOODBURN — The Patriots were held scoreless in their first two games this season.
The offensive drought was halted in the third contest.
Jay County High School’s boys soccer team got its first win of the season Monday in a 6-2 victory against the host Woodlan Warriors.
Junior Jason Schlosser scored in the 12th minute to put the Patriots (1-2, 1-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) on the board, and Nathan Heitkamp gave Jay County a two-goal cushion eight minutes later. Angel Perez assisted on both goals.
Zach Chaney found the back of the net three minutes later before Woodlan answered to cut its deficit to 3-1.
Zaaron Lee scored his first goal of the season in the 39th minute, sending Jay County into halftime with a 4-1 lead. Colton Compton assisted on Chaney’s goal, and Trevor Moeller helped on Lee’s tally.
Schlosser and Lee added their second goals of the game after intermission. Daniel Fugiett recorded the assist on Lee’s second goal, and Heitkamp was credited with the helper on Schlosser’s.
Moeller, the Patriots’ goalkeeper, made four saves.

Tennis tops UC
UNION CITY — Jay County’s boys tennis team picked up its first win of the season Monday.
It defeated sectional foe Union City, 4-1.
Jay County’s No. 2 singles player Jay Houck, a junior, cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Trevor Spence. Sophomore Garrett Rodgers dropped the first set to Zach Bradbury at No. 3 singles, but rallied to take the final two for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory.
At No. 1 singles, JCHS senior Sok Vormohr and sophomore Payton Heniser beat Elijah Thornburg and Gabe Loesch 7-5, 6-2 for their first win of the season.
Like Rodgers at No. 3 singles, the No. 2 doubles tandem of Luke Weaver and Evan VanCise dropped the opening set but still pulled out a victory. They defeated Chase Jefferis and Jacob Funk 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.
At No. 1 singles, senior Alex Clark fell to Kullen Weiss 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The Patriots’ junior varsity team won 3-2. Kyler Hudson, Jason Minnich and Conner Benter earned singles wins for Jay County.

Golf wins
FARMLAND — Jay County’s girls golf team moved above .500 with wins against Monroe Central and Bluffton on Monday.
The Patriots (3-2, 1-0 Allen County Athletic Conference) shot a season-low 205 at Hickory Hills Golf Club. Bluffton was second with 216, and Monroe Central totaled 233.
Senior Brooke Sanders tied her career-best 47 to earn match medalist honors. She made par once and also birdied one hole.
Sydney Robbins and Rachel Antrim had matching scores of 51, and Abby Saxman shot a 56 to complete the Patriots’ team total.
Kendra Dodd also competed and finished with a 58.
Cassie Reno (56) and Madison Brown (59) played as individuals.
Jaimee Josee paced Bluffton with a 49, and Kenzie Williams led Monroe Central with a 57.

Hobbs, Bruns medal
CELINA, Ohio — Jackson Hobbs and Chase Bruns shared match medalist honors Monday.
They shot matching scores of 39 to lead the Fort Recovery boys golf team to a commanding 166-219 victory against the New Knoxville Rangers at Mercer County Elks.
Bruns began his round with pars on back-to-back holes before making birdie on the par-4 third. He fell to 4-over through the next three holes. He was even on the seventh and eighth holes before closing his round with a birdie for his 3-over-par round.
Hobbs made par five times and had a birdie on the par-5 first hole.
Nick Litmer and Colt Grieshop both shot a 44 to complete the Tribe’s team score.
Micaiah Cox (51) and Austin Faller (54) also competed.

SA routs
SELMA — The Starfire offense was explosive.
The defense was hardly tested.
Three players notched hat tricks Monday as the South Adams boys soccer team thumped the Wapahani Raiders 11-0.
Justin Nussbaum led the offense for the Starfires (2-0), scoring four goals, three of which came in the first half.
Brian O’Donnell scored his only goal of the game three minutes into the contest. David Guzman tallied two of his three goals before Nussbaum scored three straight to end the half.
Nussbaum found the back of the net four minutes into the second half, and Guzman followed that up with his third goal of the game. Then, Chance Sprunger recorded the next three scores for the visiting Starfires.
Goalkeeper Tyler Sprunger made one save before giving way to McGerran Clouser, who then had two stops.
