The Chiefs had a comfortable lead heading into the final period.
The Panthers came clawing back, but fell short.
East Jay Middle School’s seventh grade girls basketball team held off a surge by the Muncie Southside Panthers on Monday for a 34-29 victory.
The EJMS eighth graders also won, 30-20.
East Jay’s seventh grade squad (5-1) exploded for 13 points in the second quarter to lead the panthers 19-10 at halftime. The Chiefs extended the advantage to 13 points, 30-17, after three quarters. Southside scored 12 points in the final quarter, but could not complete the comeback.
Natalie Miles led East Jay with 15 points. Pacie Denney followed with eight, and Alana Kunkler chipped in with five points. Grace Saxman tallied four points, and Aubrie Schwieterman and Madison Fouch had one point each.
Stout defense in the second and third quarters gave the EJMS eighth graders the win. With the score tied 9-9 after the first quarter, the Chiefs gave up one point in the second and none in the third quarter on their way to the victory.
Mikele Suman led the Chiefs with eight points. Britney Mullins and Macey Weitzel followed with six and four points respectively.
Taylor May totaled three points, with Shadie Canterbury, Mackynzie Fairchild, Asilyn Davis and Sara Muhlenkamp adding two points apiece.
EJ boys lose
MUNCIE — East Jay’s seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams lost to the Muncie Northside Titans on Monday.
The seventh grade Chiefs fell 52-12, and the eighth graders were defeated 53-20.
Bailey Cox led the seventh graders with six points. Giovanni Perod, Griffin Mann and Drake Imel had two points apiece.
Noah Arbuckle and Gabe Link paced the eighth graders with seven points respectively. Gavin Lambert tallied three points, Sheldon Upp notched two and Brian Williams had one.
SA tops Heritage
MONROEVILLE — An 18-point second quarter helped the South Adams eighth grade boys basketball team to a 41-26 victory Monday at Heritage.
Nic Stuber led the Starfires with 18 points, and Braden Baumer tallied six points. Ben Amstutz and Luke Yoder had five points each, and Dylan Irving totaled four.
Curtis Sprunger chipped in with two points, and Collin Schaffer made one free throw.
South Adams meets Adams?Central on Thursday.
