Thien hits jumper to lift Fort Recovery

RIVERDALE, Ohio — A slow third quarter got the Indians in a hole.
Grace Thien got them out of it.
Thien hit a long jumper with one second left on the clock Saturday, lifting the Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team to a 48-46 victory against the Riverdale Falcons.
The Tribe (4-1) scored just four points in the third quarter to trail 35-30 heading into the final period. The Falcons pushed their lead to as many as eight points early on in the final frame until the Indians mounted their comeback.
Thien, a sophomore, drained a 3-pointer — she was 2-of-4 from long range — with 23 seconds remaining to give the Indians a 46-45 lead, and the Falcons hit one free throw at the other end to tie the score. That is, until Thien hit a jumper from the left side for the win.
Senior Kendra Siefring and Thien had a dozen points each to lead the Indians, with Whitney Will totaling 10 to give Fort Recovery three players in double figures. Siefring also added a game-high seven rebounds and five assists.
Sydney Holderman paced Riverdale with 16 points.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team was held without a point during the third quarter in its 33-23 loss.
Hanna Knapke and Chloe Metzger both tallied eight points for the Indians.
Tribe win opener
LIMA, Ohio — Two players reaching double figures and a 24-point fourth quarter gave the Fort Recovery boys basketball team a 64-59 victory Saturday against Lima Shawnee.
The Indians (1-0) trailed by six points heading into the final frame before exploding on offense for its best scoring output of the night. Fort Recovery led by as many as seven points in the fourth quarter.
Darien Sheffer was 9-of-11 from the field on his way to a team-high 20 points for the Tribe. Micaiah Cox added 18 points to go with his 11 rebounds for a double-double. The junior was also 8-of-10 from the free-throw line.
Shawnee’s Jaden O’Neal had a game-high 29 points.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity squad lost, 40-35.
Cade Wendel led the Tribe with nine points. He also totaled four rebounds. Ryan Braun and Payton Jutte both tallied six points, and Reese Rogers had two points.
Stars lose
BERNE — The South Adams boys basketball team fell below .500 Saturday with a 39-37 loss to Wapahani.
After managing just two points in the first eight minutes and falling behind 18-10 heading into halftime, the Starfires (2-3) scored 17 points in the third quarter to trail by one heading into the final period.
Wapahani and South Adams went back-and-forth in the last eight minutes, but the Starfires’ rally fell short.
Cole Myers and Justin Nussbaum both scored 10 points to lead South Adams. Marcus Teeter totaled nine points, with Kody Fike and Jared Grabau each tallying four points. Fike also had a team-high nine rebounds.
Peyton West led Wapahani with 14 points, and Hayden Castor totaled a dozen points.
JC falls in final
MARION — After defeating Eastbrook 50-36 in the semifinal, the Jay County freshman boys basketball team lost to Marion 38-34 in the championship game of the Marion tournament.
The Patriots (5-1) rallied from a first-half deficit against Marion to tie the score at 28 after three quarters, but managed only four points in the fourth period for the first loss of the season.
Matt Franks led the Patriots in the title game with nine points. Gavin Randall and Wyatt Geesaman had seven points apiece.
Parker Grimes scored 12 points in the second quarter against Eastbrook on his way to a game-high 18. Geesaman followed with 13 points, and Xavier Ninde tallied seven.
Tribe sweep Flyers
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams both beat Marion Local on Saturday.
The eighth graders won 23-19, and the seventh graders picked up a 36-15 victory.
Olivia Patch paced the eighth grade Indians (4-1, 3-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) with nine points and nine rebounds. Harlie Dues added five points, Val Muhlenkamp totaled four points and Brooke Kahlig tallied three.
Kierra Wendel and Brenna Homan had 10 and nine points respectively to lead the Tribe seventh graders (5-0, 4-0 MAC). Ali Vaughn scored seven points and Hope Wendel added three.
Three win hoop shoot
DUNKIRK — Three local girls won titles Sunday in the Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot at West Jay Community Center.
Westlawn Elementary’s Chloe Newsome made 12 of her 25 shot attempts to win the girls 8-and-9-year-old division. Taylor Brown of Redkey Elementary made 10 shots to win the 10-and-11-year-old girls division, and Grace Morgan of West Jay Middle School drained 19 shots to take first in the girls 12-and-13-year-old division.
Gabriela Bilbrey of Westlawn was runner-up to Brown, and Westlawn’s Deryk Bowler was runner-up in the 12-and-13-year-old boys division.
