Wal-Mart theft
Two suspects were arrested for a theft at 12:21 p.m. Saturday at Wal-Mart, 950 W. Votaw St.
A Wal-Mart employee allegedly observed a man stuffing a Playstation 4 controller, worth about $60, in his coat before trying to walk out of the store. The employee said another man accompanied the thief.
A Portland police officer arrested Darren M. Miller, 27, 807 W. Walnut St., Portland, and Dustin M. Dailey, 20, 911 W. Main St., Portland, for theft by borrowing, a Class A misdemeanor.
They were both booked into Jay County Jail. Miller has since been released on a $1,000 bond.
Backing crash
A Portland woman reported at 10:10 a.m. Saturday that her car was hit by another vehicle earlier in the week.
Lori Lynn Roberts, 425 S. Meridian St., told a Portland police officer she believes her 2012 Kia Optima she was driving had been struck by another vehicle on Wednesday in the parking lot of Wal-Mart, 950 W. Votaw St.
Deer crash
An Ohio driver’s car crashed into a deer at 8 p.m. Thursday on county road 800 South in Madison Township.
Shauna R. Hopkins, 42, 11733 N. State Line Road, Union City, Ohio, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she was traveling east on county road 500 East near county road 600 East when a deer ran onto the roadway. She said she was unable to avoid hitting the animal with her 2015 Honda Accord.
Damage is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Deer struck
A deer struck a rural Portland woman’s SUV at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on country road 300 East in Wayne Township.
Donna J. Shreeve, 55, 3346 E. 300 South, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she was driving south on country road 300 East near county road 200 South when a deer hit the right side of her 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer.
Damage is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Off the road
A Redkey man’s truck went off the road at 10:50 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Indiana 67 and county road 700 West in Jefferson Township.
Thomas L. Wright, 20, 9447 W. 700 South, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was traveling southwest on Indiana 67 and tried to make a left turn onto county road 700 West. One of the tires on his 2000 Chevrolet Silverado blew out, causing it to go off the road and into the ditch on the south side of the road. It struck a railroad crossing post and rolled onto its top.
Damage is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.
Pole hit
A Portland man’s car crashed into a power pole at 9:55 p.m. Sunday on Indiana 67 in Jefferson Township.
Brock A. Bowen, 24, 981 S. 100 East, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was traveling southwest on Indiana 67. He tried to turn onto county road 400 South but couldn’t make the turn, crashing into the power pole with his 2011 Honda Civic.
Damage is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.
