Fort Recovery to open with Commodores

Fort Recovery High School’s girls basketball team will open the Division IV Wapakoneta district tournament with a matchup against Lima Perry.
The Indians (13-5) will meet the Commodores in the sectional semifinal at 8 p.m. Feb. 25 in Coldwater. Ada will take on Hardin Northern in the other sectional semifinal, with the winners advancing to the championship game at 8 p.m. Feb. 28.
In the other Coldwater sectional, St. Henry plays Waynesfield-Goshen, with the winner advancing to the championship against Marion Local.
The sectional champions advance to the district semifinal at 6:15 p.m. March 5 at Wapakoneta.
The bottom half of the bracket features two sectionals at Kenton. The first pits Ridgemont against Minster in the semifinal, with the victor to meet Upper Scioto Valley. In the other sectional, New Knoxville will meet the winner of New Bremen and Spencerville. The bottom district semifinal will be at 8 p.m. March 5, with the district championship game slated for 7 p.m. March 7.

Indians rout ’Hawks
FORT RECOVERY — Tori Lennartz was on fire.
The rest of the Indians were too.
Lennartz poured in a season-high 25 points and the Fort Recovery girls basketball team scored the first 24 of the game Saturday in a 69-28 rout of the Mississinawa Blackhawks.
The Tribe (13-5) shot 52 percent from the field while Mississinawa hit for just 29 percent, including a lackluster 3-of-17 (18 percent) in the opening half. The visiting Blackhawks missed their first eight shots of the contest and didn’t score until the final two minutes of the first quarter.
Kendra Siefring and Jocelyn Kaiser both scored 10 points to join Lennartz in double figures.
The Tribe’s junior varsity team held off a late rally to win 39-34. Sydney Dues led the Indians with 11 points, and Kelsey Jutte and Devin Post both added seven points.

Losing streak ends
FORT RECOVERY — The streak is over.
The Fort Recovery boys basketball team ended its five-game losing skid with a 64-44 victory over Mississinawa Valley on Saturday.

Fort Recovery (5-13) had a 13-12 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 29-25 heading into intermission. The Indians went 7-of-12 in the third quarter to score 19 points to pull away from the Blackhawks, and limited the visitors to just nine points in the final frame to put the game out of reach.
Brandon “Speedy” Schoen had eight assists and shared the game-high with 14 points, leading an FRHS contingent of three players who reached double figures. Caleb Martin chipped in with 13 points, and Micaiah Cox tallied 11 points to go with his six rebounds.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team also had a convincing win, defeating Mississinawa Valley 54-38.
Kyle Knapke turned in game-highs in points (19) and rebounds (eight) to lead the Indians, and Jason Roessner added eight points.
SA survives rally
BERNE — The Starfire boys basketball team survived a late rally Saturday by the Woodlan Warriors to pick up its second conference victory of the season, 72-64.
South Adams (7-8, 2-4 Allen County Athletic Conference) had a 16-point lead heading into the final frame, and held off a 28-point effort by Woodlan (2-15, 1-4 ACAC) in the final eight minutes. It was the third straight victory for the Starfires.
South Adams jumped out to an early 24-10 lead after the first quarter, but saw the advantage shrink to single digits at halftime. In the third the Starfires got a little more breathing room as the score was 51-36 heading into the final frame before the Woodlan surge.
Conner Sealscott had a game-high 19 points for the Starfires, and he also grabbed eight rebounds. Cole Myers followed with 18 points, and Marco Vasquez chipped in with a dozen.
Aaron Hahn led Woodlan with 15 points.
The Starfire junior varsity team edged the Warriors 54-53.
McGerran Clouser led South Adams with 18 points, and Justin Nussbaum added 12.

JC teams compete
UPLAND — Four local Special Olympics basketball teams competed at the Take-It-To-The-Hoop tournament Saturday at Taylor University.
The Jay County Panthers and Bobcats both finished second in their respective tournaments. The Wolves placed fourth, and the Cavaliers were fifth.
Eight athletes from the teams were given sportsmanship awards. Those honored were Junior Beanblossom, Cory LeMaster, Riley Currie, Dylan Lewis, Shelly Roser, Michelle Hostetler, Jazzy Wright and Kyle Scott.
