Waugh sets records in win
Erika Waugh led the Knights to a conference title. And she did it in record-breaking fashion.
Waugh broke Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association and Calvin College records in leading the Knights to a 783-point effort and the MIAA title at the meet hosted by Hope.
Calvin fell behind the host Flying Dutchmen in the meet that ran from Feb. 11 through Saturday, but Waugh helped reclaim the lead with her win the 200-yard backstroke with teammates Megan Schroder fourth and Betsy Otten eighth. Her time of 2 minutes, 2.62 seconds, broke the MIAA record of 2:03.49 she set last season, and the Knights never trailed again.
The senior was also the runner-up in the 100 backstroke in 58.2, and placed third in the 200 individual medley in 2:09.35.
She was part of three top-three relay efforts for Calvin, including a win in the 800-yard freestyle event. She joined Abby VanHarn, Megan Schroder and Ana Estrella in posting a time of 7:40.06.
The relay time and Waugh’s time in the 200 backstroke both surpassed the NCAA Division III National B cut time.

Jay County – 2013
Powered the NAIA No. 8 University of St. Francis men’s basketball team to a 94-81 victory over Huntington University on Tuesday.
Comer shot 7-of-11 from the field and racked up team highs of 17 points and eight rebounds for the Cougars (23-6). He also had three assists.
He has scored in double figures in each of the last three games for USF, putting up 12 points in Saturday’s win over Marion and 10 on Feb. 10 in a victory over Spring Arbor.

Swam the second leg of the Lindsey Wilson College men’s 400-yard freestyle relay team as it won the Mid-South Conference Championship Feb. 7 hosted by University of the Cumberlands.
The Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders finished second with 462 points, 86 points behind the host Patriots.
Lykins joined Iker Larzabal, Zachary Patzer and Jose Prado de Lima to a victory with a time of 3 minutes 18.37 seconds.
The Blue Raider freshman also swam the butterfly leg of the runner-up 200 medley relay team, and finished third in the 100 butterfly.
Tim Lehman
SAHS – 2012
Turned in a runner-up finish for the Goshen College men’s track team at Friday’s Defiance College Open.
Lehman narrowly missed victory in the 400-meter dash as he finished in second place. He posted a time of 52.67 seconds, just one hundredth of a second behind Philip Holliday of Huntington.
He also teamed with Alex Oberlin, Luke Graber and Luke Kaufman for second place in the 4x400 relay in 3 minutes, 48.46 seconds.
Hannah Moore
SAHSs – 2012
Also turned in a second-place effort at the Defiance College Open as she ran for the Huntington University women’s team.
Moore finished as the runner-up in the 3,000-meter run. She led a group of three consecutive Foresters to cross the finish line in 11 minutes, 7.7 seconds.
She also ran the anchor leg of the 4x400 relay as she joined Cassidy Johnson, Christine Sparks and Krista Wood for a third-place time of 4:33.49.

Led the Bethel College women’s basketball team in assists Feb. 11 and scored in double figures in a 76-65 loss to Huntington.
Hunt dished out four assists and shot 4-of-6 from the field en route to a 10-point effort. She also had three rebounds and a steal for the Pilots (10-19).
The senior totaled a team-high five assists to go along with eight points in an 82-60 loss to Marian Feb. 7, and finished with three points, three rebounds, two assists and two blocks Saturday as Bethel topped Mount Vernon Nazarene 81-75.
Eme Miller
Jay County – 2012
Recorded a season-best time for the Defiance College women’s track team Saturday at the All-Ohio Championships hosted by Otterbein.
Miller took fifth-place in her only event of the day, the 5,000-meter run. She posted a time of 18 minutes, 41.52 seconds.
The junior was also fourth in the 1,000 run as she finished in 3:13.12 Feb. 7 at Ohio Northern University’s Joe Banks Invitational.
Elijah Kahlig
FRHS – 2014
Helped the University of Findlay men’s basketball team to three wins in its last four games with a pair of 10-point efforts.
Kahlig made three of his season-high 13 attempts and scored 10 points in the Oilers’ 73-63 victory against Old Dominion Feb. 5. He also added four rebounds, two steals and one assist.
He tallied another 10 points and two assists as Findlay (13-10, 10-9 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) defeated conference rival Ashland Feb. 12.
Abbi Dunlavy
Jay County – 2014
Turned in a career-best time in the mile run for the IPFW track team as it competed at the Fred Wilt Invitational indoor meet on Saturday at Purdue.
The Mastodon freshman finished with a time of 6 minutes, 2.26 seconds, more than five seconds faster than her previous best.
At the Ohio State Invitational on Jan. 30, Dunlavy finished eighth in the 800-meter in 2:38.07.
Wade Gelhaus
FRHS – 2013
Hit a pair of field goals Saturday in the Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team’s 75-70 loss to Michigan Tech.
Gelhaus added two free throws as he finished with six points, four rebounds and an assist for the Cardinals (17-6). He also had four points and two boards Feb. 12 in a 10-point win over Northern Michigan.
The sophomore finished with six points and three rebounds Feb. 7 as SVSU topped Northwood 76-72.
Jason Pottkotter
FRHS – 2012
Played Feb. 11 for the University of Northwestern Ohio men’s basketball team in its 73-49 win over Concordia.
Pottkotter grabbed one rebound for the Racers, who are 23-6.
Holly Brunswick
FRHS – 2011
Saw action a pair of recent games for the Ohio Dominican University women’s basketball team.
Brunswick, who has had an injury-plagued collegiate career, played for one minute each on Saturday in a 76-64 victory over Malone and Feb. 5 in a 76-61 win over Findlay.
