Capsule Reports

Home burns
A fire, which burned for about two hours Wednesday night and Thursday morning before Portland firefighters were able to put it out, destroyed a Greene Township home.
Portland Fire Department was called at 10:35 p.m. Wednesday to the home at 3139 W. 200 North. Firefighters arrived at the scene at 10:41 p.m., with three trucks and 19 firefighters responding.
Firefighters from Pennville, Bryant and Geneva were called to assist
The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Cited after mishap
A Portland man was cited for leaving the scene of a property damage accident after his car struck a post protecting a kerosene pump at Circle K North convenience store, 325 N. Meridian St., Portland.
Tyler W. Boxell, 20, 605 W. High St., told Portland police that as he was traveling northeast through the parking lot he struck the post. He then went to his home, where he was located by police.
Damage to the 2014 Chrysler he was driving was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500. The car is registered to EAN Holdings LLC, Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Mirror hit
A Tennessee man was traveling through Portland yesterday when his vehicle’s rear-view mirror was struck by a semi.

At 10:23 a.m., David Turner, 53, Mercer, Tennessee, was westbound on Indiana 26 in his 2015 Freightliner Cascadia 125 when, according to Turner, an eastbound semi crossed into his lane. Turner told Jay County Sheriff’s Office the semi struck the rear-view mirror of Turner’s vehicle, breaking it and the driver’s side window, but the driver did not stop.
Damage is estimated to be under $1,000.

Ice leads to slide-off
Icy conditions caused a Pennville man’s vehicle to slide off the road Wednesday.
At 7:48 a.m. Jason Murphy, 34, 325 S. Broadway, was westbound on county road 300 North when his vehicle went over a patch of ice on the road. His 2006 Chevrolet Colorado spun and went off the road, coming to a stop after hitting a fence.
Damage is estimated to be between $1,000 and $2,500.

Collision
A Portland man and a Liberty man were involved in an accident Wednesday on an icy curve.
Larry Newton Jr., 51, 1093 W. 200 South, rural Portland, was traveling west on county road 200 West in his 2009 Ford Explorer when he approached a curve near county road 125 South. On the curve Stephen Logue, 57, 1807 S. Salem Rd, Liberty, was passing by Newton in a 1994 Kenworth T60 when Newton’s vehicle hit a patch of ice.
Newton’s vehicle slid into the front of the oncoming semi’s trailer.
Damage to the vehicles is estimated to be between $1,000 and $2,500.
