Interested in starting a new business?
The East Central Indiana Small Business Development Corporation wants to help.
Advisers from that organization will be conducting a “Launch Your Own Business” workshop in Portland on Wednesday, March 18. The workshop will be conducted at the Community Resource Center from 9 a.m. to noon. There’s a $25 registration fee that includes the cost of a workbook for each person attending.
Tom Steiner, a business adviser for the East Central ISBDC will begin holding monthly office hours in Jay County at the Community Resource Center beginning that day.
Participants in the workshop will learn how to identify objectives, describe a business concept, develop a sales forecast and estimate an operating budget.

Joins board
The chief executive officer and president of the Pittsburgh Penguins NHL team has been elected to the board of Allegheny Technologies Inc., parent company of Portland Forge.
David J. Morehouse, 54, started his career as a boilermaker before attending the Community College of Allegheny County. He went on to attend Duquesne University and holds a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University.
His election increases the number of directors to 11.
Most admired
Tyson Foods Inc., parent company of Tyson Mexican Original of Portland, has been named among “America’s Most Admired Companies” by Fortune magazine for the second year in a row.
The rankings are determined by a survey of executives, analysts and directors.
Tyson ranked fourth in the food production category this year, two spots higher than last year, scoring its highest marks for innovation, people management, management quality, and investment value.
Awards next week
The Jay County Chamber of Commerce Community Awards will be presented on Thursday, March 5, at a dinner at Jay County High School. A reception is set for 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m.
Sales up
Franklin Electric Co. reported this week that annual sales were up 9 percent but that profits were down 15 percent for the fiscal year that ended Jan. 3.
The Fort Wayne-based company reported annual earnings of $69.8 million on sales of $1.05 billion.
Loss for quarter
J.C. Penney Co. reported a loss of $59 million for the quarter. Revenue rose 2.9 percent to $3.89 billion.
Course offered
A massive open online course in financial literacy is being offered by Ivy Tech and the Hoosier Lottery.
The free course provides guidelines on basic financial skills and money management.
