11-point run in fourth gives Patriots third win in a row

The Jay County and Fort Recovery student sections went back and forth all night.
The Patriot and Indian boys basketball teams did the same on the court.
While the Tribe got the first laugh earlier in the day with the girls’ 41-24 victory over Jay County (see related story), the Patriots had the final say Saturday night.
Jay County used an 11-point run to erase a 28-21 deficit in the final quarter, and a potential game-winning shot by Fort Recovery’s Kyle Schroer missed the mark as the host Patriots hung on for a 32-30 home victory.
“We got an excellent look,” first-year FRHS coach Chris Guggenbiller said of the final play, in which Schroer’s 3-pointer from the top of the key bounced off the side of the rim and teammate Derek Backs wasn’t able to get a follow-up shot in front of the Tribe bench as time expired. “We kind of ran our same stuff for back-to-back possessions. We had Kyle come off, (Brandon “Speedy” Schoen) gave him a good look … the basketball gods weren’t kind upon us tonight.”
Fort Recovery (2-6) had a 23-21 lead heading into the final frame, and extended its advantage to seven thanks to a floater in the paint by Darien Sheffer and a three-pointer by Schroer with 6:19 left.
But Jay County (7-2), which has won each of its last three games, clawed back. Kyler Carvel split a pair of free throws at the 5:08 mark, and almost a minute later Adam Dirksen stepped out from the post to hit a 3-pointer from the right wing, making it 28-25 Fort Recovery and sending the Patriot student section screaming with fervor.
JCHS coach Craig Teagle said the trey by Dirksen, who had a game-high 15 points, was the most important bucket by the junior big man all game.
“Obviously we needed his 15 points, and to me his biggest shot was the three, stepping out when we made that little run,” said Teagle, whose team was 1-of-4 from beyond the arc. “If we don’t have his 15 points we obviously don’t win tonight.”
Jay Houck, who was held without a field goal for the first time this season, made four consecutive free throws to put the Patriots ahead 29-28. Nick Clemens then hit the front end of a one-and-one with 1:20 left, and Justin Dirksen made both of his attempts nearly a minute later to complete the run and give the home team a four-point lead, 32-28.
Following a 3-point attempt by Schroer in the final 20 seconds, FRHS senior Derek Backs made a desperation save as the ball was going out of bounds and found an open Micaiah Cox under the hoop for an easy bucket. The two points by Cox — he paced the Indians with 11 points —made it a one-possession game.
With 13 seconds remaining and a chance to extend the lead, Clemens had the front end of a one-and-one miss and Cox grabbed the defensive rebound to set up the final play at the other end of the court.
Down the stretch, it was free throws that helped Jay County get the lead, as eight of its final 11 points came from the stripe. The Patriots shot 83 percent (15-of-18) from the line.

“We shoot 78 percent for the year so that’s kind of our strength,” he said. “We hope we get the lead, take care of the basketball, get fouled and get to the free-throw line.”
It took 4:11 to get the first points of the contest, a Schoen feed to Cox under the basket. The Patriots had a 6-4 advantage after the opening quarter and led 15-11 heading into the break.
Following intermission, Fort Recovery opened the third quarter on a 7-2 run thanks to a 3-pointer by Derek Backs, three points by Cox and a freebie by Caleb Martin.
Adam Dirksen scored all six points for Jay County in the frame — all of which came in the paint — as the Patriots kept it close until the Indians got a little separation to start the fourth.
“They’ve always been tight, hard-fought, close basketball games,” Teagle said of the Patriot-Indian rivalry. “I’ll be honest with you, I just thought Fort Recovery’s effort level was much better than ours tonight.
“I thought they were more intense and more focused. I was disappointed, I thought we’d come out a lot more focused and our effort level would be better.”

Junior varsity
Much like its varsity counterparts, the Fort Recovery junior varsity team had a chance to tie the game on its final possession.
The Tribe’s shot fell short, and Jay County held on the rebound in the final seconds to hang on for a 24-22 victory.
The Patriots held the Tribe to just three points in the third quarter while taking a 19-15 lead. Jay County used a 6-of-11 effort from the field in the second half while Fort Recovery was just 3-of-15.
Jay County’s Justin Crouch led all players with 10 points, and Joey Springer followed with six. Spencer Calvert and Ryan Burkett each tallied three points.
Kyle Knapke paced the Indians with eight points. Travis Sutter totaled five points, and Ryan Braun and Jason Roessner each chipped in with three.
