Patriots handle Starfires

BERNE — The Jay County and South Adams high school wrestling teams met Tuesday as Allen County Athletic Conference opponents for the first time.
The visiting Patriots came away with a 43-25 victory.
After South Adams senior Sawyer Miller pinned Tristan Atkins in the 120-pound weight division, Jay County got wins in nine of the next 13 matches to improve to 7-3 (3-2 ACAC) on the season.
Colton Compton (126), Dallas Dudelston (132), Ivan Hemmelgarn (145), Levi Hummel (170), Andy Kohler (182), Jon Blankenship (220) and Kaimen Sanders (113) all won for the Patriots, with Compton and Blankenship earning pins.
Jay County’s Ben Antrim (152) and Tyler Leonhard (160) won by forfeit.
In addition to Miller, South Adams got victories from Keegan Boxell (138), Isaiah Baumgartner (195), Mason Morningstar (285) and Brandon Wynn (106).

Concordia tops Jay
FORT WAYNE — Jay County’s girls basketball team couldn’t handle DeJour Young and the Concordia Cadets on Tuesday.
Young scored a game-high 26 points, including a 12-of-13 effort from the free-throw line, in a 50-34 defeat of the visiting Patriots.
Concordia had a 15-9 lead after the opening quarter, and extended its advantage to eight points, 25-17, heading into intermission.
The Cadets then created some separation in the third quarter thanks to a 14-point effort, holding the Patriots to just five points in the frame.
It was the second consecutive loss for Jay County, which falls to 9-3.
JCHS senior Bre McIntire led the Patriots with 11 points.
Freshman Taylor Homan recorded seven points, and Abby Wendel and Catherine Dunn both had five points.
Ava Kunkler added four points.


Star swimmers win
BERNE — South Adams’ boys and girls swim teams both finished first Tuesday in a three-team meet with Minster (Ohio) and Fort Recovery.
The Starfire boys scored 100 points for first, while Minster was second with 58 points and Fort Recovery was third with 32.
The SAHS girls took first with 85 points. Minster was second with 65, edging the Indians by three points.
Daniel Burson and Drew LeFever both won double events for the SAHS boys. Burson took first in both the 200-yard freestyle and 500 freestyle races and LeFever won the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly.
For the SAHS girls, Cady Farlow earned victories in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.
Ashton Klopp (100 butterfly), Brette Klopp (500 freestyle) and Zach Teeple (100 backstroke) also won for South Adams.
Carley Stone earned the lone individual victory for the FRHS girls, finishing first in the 100 backstroke. Mackinley Timmerman won the 100 breast for the Tribe boys.

Patriot frosh win
YORKTOWN — Jay County’s freshman boys basketball team held off a surge by Yorktown in the second half Monday in a 30-25 victory over the host Tigers.
The Patriots (4-2) limited the Tigers to just two points in the second quarter as they took a 14-6 lead into halftime. Yorktown came out strong in the third quarter, however, outscoring Jay County 12-5 in the frame to trail 19-18 heading into the final period.
Jay County pulled away in the fourth quarter for its fourth win of the season.
Jordan Stultz paced the Patriot offense with eight points. Holton Hill tallied six points, with Connor Davis and Collin Haines totaling five points apiece.
Max Moser chipped in with four points and Garrett Rodgers added two.
