Three win titles at Garrett

GARRETT — Three local wrestlers earned titles in their respective weight classes at the Garrett Invitational on Saturday.
Jay County High School junior Andy Kohler was the lone Patriot to finish first, placing first in the 182-pound weight division.
It is the second championship in as many tournaments for Kohler, who also won the East Central Indiana Classic Dec. 27 hosted by the Patriots. Kohler improved his season record to 25-2.
Sawyer Miller (120) and Mason Morningstar (285) of South Adams earned tournament championships. Miller is now 26-0 on the season, and Morningstar moved to 18-3.
Jay County placed fifth in the 14-team tournament with 157.5 points, and South Adams was sixth with 125.5.
Leo took the team title with 200 points, East Noble was second with 194.5 and Garrett scored 191 for third.
Earning top-six finishes for Jay County were Levi Hummel (second – 160), Dallas Dudelston (third – 132), Tyler Leonhard (third – 152), Kaimen Sanders (fourth – 113), Colton Compton (fifth – 126), Seth Fugiett (sixth – 106) and Ivan Hemmelgarn (sixth – 145).
For South Adams, Wyatt Miller (second – 106), Briar Goodwin (third (113), Isaiah Baumgartner (fourth – 195) and Corbin Blomeke (sixth – 160) placed in the top six.

Chief 8th win invite

The East Jay Middle School eighth grade boys basketball team finished first at the East Jay Invitational on Saturday.
The Chiefs picked up a 44-33 victory over Monroe Central in the opener, and then defeated Bellmont 53-38 in the championship.
East Jay’s seventh graders dropped the first game 20-19 to Monroe Central on a last-second shot. The Chiefs then defeated Bellmont 40-19.
West Jay’s eighth graders lost to Bellmont 36-30 in the opener before beating Monroe Central 31-29.
The seventh grade Eagles lost to Monroe Central 29-24 in the championship after beating Bellmont 21-12.
Ryan Schlechty led the EJMS eighth graders with 29 points for the tournament, followed by Michael Schletchy’s 18.
Parker Grimes added 14, and Korbin Auker had 10.
Noah Arbuckle led the seventh grade Chiefs with 25 points, and Gabe Link added 19.
Gabe Faulkner poured in 29 points for the eighth grade Eagles, who also got 17 points from Wyatt Geesaman and 16 from Noah Harris.
Trevon Vore paced the WJMS seventh graders with 12 points.
