Jay Co. holds off Arabians

PENDLETON — Jay County High School’s girls basketball team fought off a fourth-quarter rally by Pendleton Heights to defeat the Arabians in overtime, 52-47.
Trailing 29-23 heading into the fourth quarter, Pendleton Heights (12-7) scored 19 points in the final frame to send the game into overtime. Jay County (14-3) held the Arabians to five points in the extra period to record its fifth straight win, the second time this season the Patriots have won five or more games in a row.
The Patriots had an 11-1 lead after the first quarter, and went point-for-point with the host team in the second to head into the break with a 19-9 advantage.
Catherine Dunn led the Patriots with 14 points, and Abby Wendel followed with 13. Bre McIntire and Hanna Ault tallied nine points apiece.

Tribe routs Stars
FORT RECOVERY — The South Adams girls basketball team had a hard time finding the bottom of the hoop on Tuesday.
Fort Recovery capitalized on the struggles.
The Indians won their fourth straight game with a 48-25 clubbing of the visiting Starfires.
South Adams (9-8) made just one field goal and scored eight points in the opening half as it fell behind 26-8 after the first 16 minutes.
Fort Recovery (9-3) kept its foot on the gas pedal following the break, taking a 36-15 lead into the final frame before completing the lopsided victory, its fourth win of 20 or more points.
FRHS junior Kendra Siefring shared the game high in scoring with Sydney Willis of South Adams. Both players scored 13 points. Siefring was 7–of-8 from the free-throw line while Willis made five of her eight attempts.
Whitney Will tallied 10 points for Fort Recovery, and Jocelyn Kaiser totaled nine. Carley Stone had four points, and Grace Thien and Cassidy Rammel each added three.

SA tops Angola
ANGOLA — Seven Starfire wrestlers picked up wins Tuesday in a 51-13 victory over the Angola Hornets.
Mason Morningstar pinned James Purkey seven seconds into the second period of their match in the 220-pound weight division. Briar Goodwin needed 2 minutes, 18 seconds to deposit Issac Wagner at 113, Wyatt Miller (106) pinned Parker Michael in 2:21 and Boaz Marbach (152) defeated Bryan Sears in 4:57.
Earning wins by decision for South Adams were Josh Lahr (132), Keegan Boxell (138) and Isaiah Baumgartner (195).

Braxton Haight (126), Stephen Knapp (285) and Sawyer Miller (120) won by forfeit.

Klopp breaks record
BERNE — Ashton Klopp broke her own school record Tuesday in the South Adams girls swim team’s 123-53 victory over Huntington North.
The Starfire boys also won, 88-85.
Klopp’s time of 1 minute, 0.84 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly was two hundredths of a second faster than her previous mark.
The sophomore also won the 50 freestyle. Brette Klopp placed first in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke, and Cady Farlow took the top spot in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.
Olivia Von Gunten won the 500 freestyle, and Korinna Schindler was uncontested in diving.
South Adams also won all three relays as it was victorious in 11 of the 12 events.
Drew LeFever and David Steffen both won dual events for the Starfire boys. LeFever touched the wall first in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, and Steffen won the 50 and 100 freestyle races.
Daniel Burson finished first in the 200 freestyle and Xavier Rupp, like Schindler, won the diving event without competition.

FR girls fall
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery Middle School seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams both lost to the Versailles Tigers on Tuesday.
The eighth graders lost 33-15, and the seventh graders fell to the Tigers 33-13.
Hannah Knapke paced the eighth grade Indians with eight points, with Aleigha Jenkins and Elise Gehle adding four and three points respectively.
For the Tribe seventh graders, Chloe Showalter had four points and Brooke Kahlig tallied three points.
Olivia Patch, Valerie Muhlenkamp and Lydia Wenning contributed two points apiece.
