Ahrens, Tigers top FR

VERSAILLES, Ohio — Justin Ahrens scored the game’s first three points. Then Kyle Ahrens took over.
His 33-point outburst, which came along with team-high totals in rebounds and assists, doomed the Fort Recovery High School boys basketball team Friday as it fell 71-41 to the Division III No. 8 Versailles Tigers.
Kyle Ahrens powered Versailles (11-2, 4-1 MAC), which opened on a 7-0 run and never relinquished the lead. The Indians trailed by double figures for the final 21 minutes, 58 seconds, of the game after Justin Mashal scored off of a Kyle Ahrens assist at the 5:58 mark of the second period.
Ahrens shot 10-of-19 from the field, hit four 3-pointers and made all but one of his 10 free-throw attempts on the way to his game-high scoring total. He added a game-high of six rebounds and dished out a team-best three assists.
Fort Recovery (4-10, 1-3 MAC) struggled offensively in the second half, shooting 33 percent and trailing by as many as 36 points. It shot 38 percent for the game.
Michaiah Cox totaled 17 points and six rebounds to lead the Indians, who dropped their second consecutive game after picking up back-to-back road wins over Arcanum and Parkway. Darien Sheffer followed with 10 points and also grabbed six rebounds.
Caleb Martin had five boards, and Brandon “Speedy” Schoen dished out three assists.
Jace Barga followed Ahrens for Versailles with 11 points.
Junior varsity
Fort Recovery gave up a couple of big quarters and couldn’t overcome them with one of its own as it fell 53-46 to the Tigers.
Versailles took control with 18 points in the first quarter and led by nine heading into the final period. The Indians racked up 21 fourth-quarter points, but gave up 19 as the home team held on.
Ryan Braun shot 9-of-11 from the field and led FRHS with 20 points and seven rebounds. Cade Wendel followed with nine points and six boards.
Alex Wendel’s 12 points set the pace for the Tigers. Austin Knapke joined him in double figures with 10.
