Tankers sweep Giants

MARION — Jay County High School’s boys and girls swim teams both beat the Marion Giants on Thursday.
The Patriot boys took first place in all 12 events in their 126-48 victory, and the girls ended their regular season with a 134-49 win.
Cody White and James Keen both won dual events for the JCHS boys. White was first in the 200-yard individual medley and the 500 freestyle, and Keen took the top spot in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke.
Christopher McDowell (200 freestyle), Connor Daniels (50 freestyle), Luke Rowles (100 freestyle), Sok Vormohr (100 backstroke) and Christian Phillips (diving) also won individual events.
For the Patriot girls, who host the sectional meet Feb. 7, Elizabeth McDowell was the lone double-winner, placing first in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle.
Ashley Mark (200 freestyle), Sophie Bader (50 freestyle), Anne Vormohr (100 butterfly) and Alex Bader (100 backstroke) also won for Jay County.
Samantha Link won diving, setting a new career-best with a score of 196.1.

Fort beats Coldwater
COLDWATER, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s girls basketball team evened its Midwest Athletic Conference record with a road victory against Coldwater on Thursday.
The Indians defeated the host Cavaliers 61-48 to improve to 11-4 (3-3 MAC).
Fort Recovery shot 50 percent or better in each half as its offense outlasted Coldwater down the stretch. The Indians had an 18-13 lead after the opening quarter and extended their advantage to 31-22 at halftime.
Kendra Siefring led a contingent of three Fort Recovery players to score a dozen or more points. The junior poured in a team-high 16 points, with Whitney Will adding a career-high 15. Tori Lennartz followed with 12 points.
Coldwater’s Sarah Kanney led all players with 18 points.
The FRHS junior varsity squad lost to Coldwater, 55-26. Kiah Wendel led all players with 12 points, and Sydney Dues added seven points.

Willis leads Stars
BERNE — South Adams junior Sydney Willis racked up 21 points in the Starfire girls basketball team’s 56-35 victory against the Churubusco Eagles on Thursday.
South Adams (11-8) raced out to a 19-4 lead after eight minutes, and extended its advantage to 31-12 at halftime. The Eagles (11-9) came out firing in the second half, scoring 15 points in the third quarter, but weren’t able to close the gap.
Willis hit five 3-pointers in the contest, helping the Starfires to back-to-back wins for the third time this season. The last time South Adams won consecutive games was when it took three straight in early December.
Cindy In’t Groen scored 17 points to join Willis in double figures. Sharon Balsiger added nine points, and Lexi Dellinger had four.

SA swimmers win
WATERLOO — The South Adams boys and girls swim teams picked up wins against the DeKalb Barons on Thursday.
The Starfire girls won 131-37, and the boys were victorious 91-76.
Brette and Ashton Klopp both won two events for the girls. Brette took first in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 backstroke, and Ashton won both the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
Mayia Curtis (200 freestyle), Hadi Hawbaker (100 freestyle) and Olivia VonGunten (500 freestyle) also won for the Starfires. The girls won all three relays.
Daniel Burson, Drew LeFever and David Steffen were dual-event winners for the boys team. Burson finished first in the 200 and 500 freestyle races, LeFever earned victories in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly and Steffen won the 50 and 100 freestyle races.
Zach Teeple also won for the SAHS boys in the 100 backstroke.
