Paintings to be exhibited at Arts Place
Taking Note
Arts Place, 131 E. Walnut St. in Portland, will exhibit the abstract paintings of Elizabeth Diaz and Orie Shafer from July 24 to Aug. 21.
Diaz received a master’s degree in fine arts in painting from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. Her abstract paintings celebrate her love of land, sea, and sky.
Shafer is a veteran of the United States Navy and taught studio art in Indiana public schools for 35 years. His work explores pure abstraction by use of color and layered pigment application.

Scholarships offered
The Dunkirk Foundation is accepting applications for two scholarships for non-traditional students.
Marilee & Gayle Gaunt Memorial Scholarship was established from the estate of Betty Gaunt in memory of her daughters, and is for those living in the 47336 zip code.
The Ella & Irene Cunningham Scholarship was established by long time Dunkirk teacher Ella Cunningham. Preference will be given to female students pursuing a degree in education or business.
Application forms are available at the Dunkirk City Building, can be downloaded from the Dunkirk Foundation Facebook page, requested from [email protected] or from any Dunkirk Foundation board member.
In addition to the completed form, applicants must submit a one-page statement/essay how the scholarship will help achieve their educational goal, submit three letters of recommendation, and participate in an interview on Thursday, Aug. 6, in Dunkirk.

Train adventures
The Twilight Limited Train to Dinner will leave Connersville at 6 p.m. the first and third Friday of the month through October.
The train will travel to the Laurel Hotel Restaurant for a chicken dinner or other home-cooked meals. The cost is $32 for adults and $17 for children two to 12.
A Wild West Train to Dinner is also available on July 31, Aug. 28 and Oct. 30. The cost is $39 per person.
