Rockets sweep after defeat
Reynolds, West earn victories
DAYTON — It had been more than two weeks since the Rockets last played.
Mother Nature is to thank for that, having washed out Portland’s previous eight games — a total of 20 this season.
So when the Rockets finally hit the field again Friday, the time off didn’t work in their favor.
After dropping a 3-0 game Friday against the Miami Valley Wolverines, Portland bounced back to sweep the Wolverines on Saturday, 6-2 and 7-1.
Dalton Tinsley and Brandon Reamon, Portland’s No. 1 and No. 2 hitters, tallied 13 hits on the weekend for the Rockets (14-4). Reamon led the way with seven hits, and Tinsley tallied six. Catcher TJ Lindstrand added four, and 2014 South Adams High School graduate Collin Affolder chipped in with three.
Muncie Southside product Tyler Reynolds pitched the Rockets to the win in the first game of the doubleheader Saturday.
He allowed 10 hits but only gave up two runs, one of which was earned. He walked one and struck out a half dozen in six innings of work, pushing his record to 3-0.
Jimmy West (2-1) recorded the win in game two, allowing one run on five hits in five innings.
Friday night, Portland left 13 runners on base in the 3-0 defeat. The Rockets loaded the bases in each of the first two innings but weren’t able to capitalize on the opportunities. Mitch Waters, a 2002 Jay County grad, suffered the loss. He gave up all three runs — one earned — while allowing six hits. He is now 4-1 on the year.
Portland has a full slate of games this week, starting with a road game against the Fort Wayne Expos at 7 p.m. tonight. The Rockets travel to Taylor University at 7 p.m. Tuesday to take on the Twin City Bankers before returning home at 7 p.m. Thursday against the Summit City Sluggers.
The Rockets make the trek back up to Fort Wayne for a single game at 7 p.m. Friday against the Expos before hosting the same team for a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
Portland meets the Fort Wayne Jackers for a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
