Night out set for Aug. 4

Taking Note

The 32nd National Night Out will be celebrated from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4 in Portland.
Residents in Portland and Jay County are asked to lock their doors, turn on their outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors.
Police officers, sheriff’s deputies, law enforcement chaplains, first responders and fire fighters will be present to answer questions.   
The Portland Police, Jay County Sheriff’s and Portland Fire departments will have vehicles on display at the corner of Votaw and Meridian streets. The Elks Lodge Drug Prevention trailer will also be there will information and the Portland Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni will be serving free hot dogs.
National Night Out is designed to 1) heighten crime and drug prevention awareness 2) generate support for and participation in local anticrime efforts 3) strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and 4) send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Supplies needed
Donations of school supplies or cash donations are being accepted at the Dunkirk City building, as part of the Westlawn-West Jay School Supply Assistance Program.
Classroom supply lists for Westlawn and a supply list for West Jay are available at the office. Monetary donations may be mailed to Dunkirk City office, in care of Westlawn-West Jay School Supply Assistance Program,  131 S. Main St., Dunkirk, IN 47336.

Zectangle class
An introduction to Zectangle will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 8, at Jay County Public Library, 315 N. Ship St. in Portland.  
Participants will learn to draw structured patterns, called tangles, to create beautiful images from Angela Gamble, a certified Zectangle teacher, who will be teaching the class.

At Fort
Jack Blosser, site manager of Fort Ancient, will be the guest speaker at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 2, at  the Fort Recovery State Museum.
Fort Ancient is a collection of Native American earthworks in Warren County, Ohio.

At Minnetrista
Muncie Civic Theatre will perform a live theatre performance of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at Minnetrista in Muncie as part of its Summer Stage Fest.
It will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, on the east lawn.  

Dean’s list
Kylie Kahlig, Fort Recovery, was named to the spring quarter dean’s list at the University of Northwestern Ohio College of Occupational Professions.
Benjamin Dilworth, Kelsey Fiely and Jason Pottkotter, all of Fort Recovery, were named to the spring quarter dean’s list at the University of Northwestern Ohio College of Business.
Elijah Kahlig, Fort Recovery, was named to the spring semester dean’s list at the University of Findlay (Ohio).
Tess Bruggeman, Fort Recovery, was named to the spring semester dean’s list at Trine University in Angola.
