Fell asleep
Four people were injured when a driver fell asleep at the wheel early Saturday.
Lonnie E. Miller, 21, 10416 county road 40, Millersburg, fell asleep while driving his 2011 Chevrolet 1500 south on Indiana 1 near county road 650 North in Penn Township.
The vehicle drifted across the northbound lane and into the ditch. It traveled along the ditch before going airborne, hitting a culvert and coming to rest in a stream.
Miller and his passengers, Joseph D. Yoder, 17, and Dale L. Stahalbach, 17, both of 6645 N. 675 West, Shipshewana, and Michael J. Helmuth, 17, 6255 S. 900 West, Topeka, all complained of pain after the accident.
Damage in the 1:11 a.m. accident was estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.
Guns stolen
Caleb Rouch, 532 N. Western Ave., told Portland police two loaded guns were stolen from his house.
The theft of the Taurus PT-92 AFS 9 mm and Titan FIE .25 auto was reported at 7:45 p.m. Sunday.
Struck mirrors
A Portland man and a Union City woman were involved in an accident in Jefferson Township on Sunday.
Ralph Armstrong, 42, 710 W. Walnut St., Portland, was driving west on county road 550 South east of Mt. Pleasant Road in a 2004 Ford F250 owned by Matt’s Garage, 205 W. Union St., Portland. Wanda Powell, 63, 202 N. Columbia St., Union City, was driving east on the same road in her 2003 Ford F250.
According to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report, the road was too narrow for both vehicles, and the trucks’ mirrors collided as the vehicles passed.
Damage in the 7:18 p.m. accident was estimated to be less than $1000.
Deer struck
A Fort Recovery man struck a deer with his vehicle Sunday.
Ronald Lee, 71, 117 E. Broadway St., Lot 15, was traveling east on Indiana 26 east of county road 500 East in Noble Township when a deer ran into the side of his 1999 Ford Crown Victoria, breaking the driver’s side window and denting the side of the car.
The damage was estimated to be between $1000 and $2500. The accident occurred at 8:56 p.m.
Fort man injured
A Fort Recovery man was injured in an accident May 30.
Mitchel Petit, 40, 411 E. Boundary St., was ejected from a 2004 Dodge Durango while traveling south on State Line Road, south of St. Anthony Road in Washington Township at 6:06 a.m. Petit was driving south on State Line Road when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to leave the roadway and roll over multiple times before to coming to a rest in a field. Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash.
He was transported to Mercer County Community Hospital and then to Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, Ohio.
