Whether by forfeit or on the field, the Rockets came away with a double-header sweep.
Because the Fort Wayne Marlins were short-handed with just seven players in the dugout, Portland gave the visitors a couple of its own in order to allow the games to be played. But that bit of help didn’t matter, as the host Rockets won 14-0 and 6-2.
The home team wasted little time getting its offense going after starting pitcher Dan Bollenbacher worked around a couple of base runners in a scoreless top of the first inning.
Brandon Reamon ripped the first of his three game-one hits for a one-out double to right field in the bottom of the frame, and Billy Geeslin was hit by a pitch. Fort Wayne pitcher Josh Ulrey then left the game because of a sore elbow, only to have Brendan Lomow take the mound and hit Alex Delk with a pitch to load the bases.
Reamon scored on a passed ball, and T.J. Lindstrand drove in Geeslin and Delk for a three-run first inning.
The Rockets scored five more runs in a second inning, highlighted by two-run doubles from Ryan Penley and Reamon, and another five in a third inning in which two Marlin pitchers combined to hit three batters.
Dan Bollenbacher tossed the shutout despite allowing two runners to reach base in each of the first three innings. He struck out eight and gave up just three hits, with two of those coming from Fort Wayne leadoff hitter Cody Mudinski.
Reamon, who drove in four runs and scored twice in the opener, continued his hot streak in game two with a home run. Kyle Selvey, a 2014 Jay County High School graduate, added a three-run double.
Geeslin and Reamon finished the day with four hits apiece, and Penley added three as the Rockets (8-1) extended their winning streak to seven games. Jimmy West tossed two innings of relief to earn the game-two victory.
Portland will seek to avenge its lone loss of the season when it travels Tuesday to Taylor University to take on the Twin City Bankers. The team’s split a double header on May 24.
