Three Chiefs win titles

CRAWFORDSVILLE — A trio of wrestlers from East Jay Middle School earned tournament titles Saturday at the Southmont Super 16.
Mason Winner and Thomas Hemmelgarn were both 5-0 on the day to win the championships in their respective weight classes. Winner competed at 126 pounds, pinning four opponents and receiving a forfeit in the other match. Hemmelgarn earned all five victories at 138 by virtue of pin.
Daniel Ostrowski picked up three pins to win the title at 175. He finished a perfect 4-0 in the tournament.
At 132, Chandler Bush went 2-2 to finish fourth.
Hunter Mills, Brian Newman, Chandler Chapman and Taylor Donnelly were all 2-1, but did not place. Derek Allen finished 1-1.
Two earn all-state
Two Jay County High School football players earned academic all-state honors for the 2014 season.
Seniors Andrew McShane and Hunter Prescott were given the nod for their efforts in the classroom and on the football field.
To be considered for academic all-state, players must participate in 70 percent of their team’s games, accumulate a GPA of at least 3.4, as well as achieve an ACT score of 24 and above or an SAT score of 1,660 and above.
