Jay tankers end season with wins

The Jay County middle school boys and girls swim teams capped their season with wins against the Blackford Bruins on Monday.
The girls defeated Blackford 201-65 to finish the year undefeated. The boys beat the Bruins 140-76.
Eliza Bader and Lilli Clemmons both won a pair of events for the girls. Bader took first in the 100-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, and Clemmons won the 50 and 400 freestyle races.
Ashlyn Dow (200 freestyle), Kaitlyn Dow (50 butterfly), Kaitlyn Hicks (100 freestyle), Leah Hummel (diving) and Jenna Dunfee (100 backstroke) also earned victories.
Kaitlyn Dow and Bader teamed with Pacie Denney and Cydney Smith to win the 200 freestyle relay, then joined Rieley Brewster and Kailee Denny to win the 300 freestyle relay.
Tayler Smeltzer and Sammy Crump were dual winners for the boys. Crump won the 50 and 100 freestyle while Smeltzer took first in the 50 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Smeltzer did not lose an individual race all season.
Also earning wins for the boys were Matthew Minnich (200 freestyle), Griffin Mann (400 freestyle) and Ben Strausburg (100 breaststroke).
The boys also swept all three relays.

Winner places 2nd
INDIANAPOLIS — Mason Winner finished in second place Saturday at the Indiana State Wrestling Association Folkstyle State Tournament at Warren Central.
Winner, a seventh grader at East Jay Middle School, competed in the 128-pound weight class of the Schoolboy division and went 5-1 with his only loss coming in the finals. Ethan Hicks of Carroll Wrestling Club defeated Winner in the title match by an 8-7 decision.
Jay County High School junior Andy Kohler placed fourth in the Cadet division at 195 pounds. He was eighth at 182 as a sophomore.
EJMS seventh grader Cooper Jacks and Bailey Ludy, an eighth grader, both finished seventh in the Schoolboy division at 210 and 265 respectively.
Also competing in the weekend tournament were JCHS wrestlers Ben Antrim, Gaven Hare, Levi Hummel, Dallas Dudleston, Mitchell Frasher, Tristen Atkins and Kaimen Sanders. Jordan Shricker of East Jay also participated.
