Capsule Reports

Following too closely
Two Jay County women were involved in a collision about 9:43 a.m. Saturday in Portland.
Shayla Bogard, 17, 2870 E. 500 North, Portland, was southbound on Meridian Street in a 2001 Subaru Outback, registered to William Rigsbee, same address. According to a Portland Police Department report, she came to a stop at Lafayette Street. The vehicle Bogard was driving was then struck from behind by a 2007 Jeep Liberty driven by Vicky Boolman, 53, 306 E. Main St., Bryant. The Liberty was registered to Michael Boolman, same address.
Damage in the accident was estimated to be less than $1,000.

Pedestrian struck
A Portland man fainted while driving, causing the vehicle he was operating to leave the road and strike a parked vehicle and then a pedestrian about 9:18 a.m. Saturday in Portland.
Jeffery Hodge Sr., 57, 519 W. Race St., was northbound on Meridian St. when, according to a Portland Police Department report, he blacked out and the 2008 Chevrolet Impala he was driving veered off the road to the west near Lafayette Street. Hodge’s vehicle struck a parked 2001 Dodge Stratus, registered to Superior Auto, 1420 N. Meridian St., Portland, and then hit Richard Williams, 48, 823 E. North St., Portland. Williams had just exited the Stratus.
Jay Emergency Medical Service transported Williams to Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie for treatment of injuries from the accident.
Damage in the accident was estimated to be between $5,000 and $10,000.
Improper passing
Two Jay County men were involved in an accident about 3:30 p.m. Saturday on Indiana 67 near county road 1250 West.
Marcus Powell, 37, 119 E. Jay St., Dunkirk, was northeast bound on Indiana 67 in his 1997 Chevrolet Lumina. As he attempted to turn left onto county road 1250 West his vehicle was struck on the left by a 2014 Chrysler Town and Country, driven by Norman Miller, 82, 2656 E. 300 North, Portland. According to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report, Miller was attempting to pass Powell when the accident occurred.
Damage in the accident was estimated to be between $2,500 and $5,000.

Deer hit
A Portland teen hit a deer with her vehicle about 6:30 a.m. Thursday on county road 200 West near county road 100 North.
Abby Wendel, 17, 3194 N. U.S. 27, Portland, was southbound on county road 200 West when a deer ran onto the road near county road 100 North. Wendel struck the deer with the 2010 Toyota LXS she was driving. The vehicle is registered to Jacqueline Wendel, same address.
Damage in the accident was estimated to be between $2,500 and $5,000.
