Jay Co. sectional gets Delaware flair

The sectional assignments for Jay County High School will have a splash of Delaware County.
South Adams also saw slight changes to its sectional rivals.
Jay County’s baseball and softball teams, which will be Class 3A for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years, were placed in Sectional 24 with Delta and Yorktown as the IHSAA Executive Committee approved the assignments during its Monday meeting. The six-team field also includes Guerin Catholic, Hamilton Heights and Tipton.
Muncie Central, which was bumped up to 4A after consolidating with Southside, joins Jay County’s sectional for boys and girls basketball. The Class 4A Sectional 6 is now a six-team group with Homestead, Huntington North, Fort Wayne South Side and Wayne. Previously, it was a five-team sectional.
Those same six schools, along with the addition of 2014 Class 3A state champion Fort Wayne Concordia, will compete on the volleyball court. Concordia was moved up to 4A because of its tournament success factor.

Instead of being the southernmost team in its football sectional, Jay County will now be the northernmost. The Patriots’ new foes are Connersville, Delta, Greenfield-Central, Mt. Vernon (Fortville), New Castle, Pendleton Heights and Richmond. Because of enrollment, Delta was bumped up from 3A, and Richmond moved down from 5A.
Gone is the potential for a road trip to play the Berries (Logansport) or the Hot Dogs (Frankfort), but the Patriots could meet the Red Devils (Richmond), Arabians (Pendleton Heights), or Marauders (Mt. Vernon). Pendleton Heights, Connersville, Delta and Greenfield-Central are all former Jay County sectional opponents.
Jay County’s boys and girls soccer sectional remained unchanged. It is a four-team field with Muncie Central, Yorktown and Delta. The Patriot girls are back-to-back sectional champions, and the boys squad also won the 2014 sectional title.
The biggest change for the Starfires came on the gridiron. The 2014 regional champions were moved to Class 2A from 1A, and will now be in a sectional with Central Noble, Churubusco, Eastside, Prairie Heights, Whitko, Woodlan and Bluffton. The latter two are Allen County Athletic Conference opponents.
South Adams’ baseball and softball sectional was reduced to a six-team field with Adam Central, Bluffton, Churubusco, Canterbury and Woodlan. Eastside, which remains a rival for the Starfires on the basketball court, was moved to another sectional.
