Left of center
The driver killed in a Friday afternoon traffic accident in Knox Township was traveling partially left of center at the time of the crash, according to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report released Tuesday.
Roger L. Boyd, 68, 532 W. High St., Portland, was northbound on Indiana 1 just south of its intersection with Indiana 26 when his 2006 Kia Sedona collided with a southbound flatbed truck.
The driver of the truck, Dean A. Cole, 49, Elwood, told police that when he came over the top of a small hill about 2:30 p.m. he encountered the Boyd vehicle and did not have time to avoid the collision.
Cole’s 2013 Freightliner, registered to Sunbelt Inc. of Peoria, Illinois, caught fire after the crash. Cole was treated at the scene by Jay Emergency Medical Service personnel for injuries to his lower arm and elbow. Boyd was pronounced dead at the scene.
Damage in the collision was estimated to be between $25,000 and $50,000.
Backing accident
Between $2,500 and $5,000 in damage was reported in a backing accident shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of MSSL Wiring Systems, 700 Industrial Drive, Portland.
The drivers told Portland police that Lori L. Roberts, 44, 425 S. Meridian St., Portland, had backed her 2012 Kia Optima out of a parking space, stopped and was moving forward when Tara L. Devoss, 26, 253 E. Bell Ave., Redkey, backed her 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix into the passenger side rear door of the Kia.
