Redkey hires
Redkey council met in executive session Thursday to review applications for utility workers and hired Brandon Barnard at a special meeting that followed.
Barnard lives in Redkey and had previously worked for Yorktown Street Department. He will work in all departments for the town.
Backing crash
A Redkey man backed his car into another vehicle at 3 p.m. Thursday on county road 700 South in Richland Township.
Jessy W. Wright, 23, 9447 W. 700 South, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was backing a 1998 Toyota Camry out of his driveway when it collided with a 2013 Dodge Dart. He said he did not see the Dart prior to the accident.
The Camry is registered to Deborah K. Wright, same address as driver and the Dart is registered to Katlyn J. Farris, 110 W. Daugherty St., Redkey.
Damage is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
Deer collision
A Portland woman’s vehicle hit a deer Thursday on Indiana 67.
Charity D. Wimmer, 42, 2842 W. Indiana 67 South, was traveling west on Indiana 67 near Indiana 26 when a deer ran into the roadway. She told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she could not avoid hitting the deer with the 2008 Chevrolet HHR she was driving.
The HHR is registered to Joshua D. Kahlig, same address as driver.
Damage in the 1:45 p.m. crash is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Money stolen
A Wal-Mart employee reported that a couple stole money from the store, 950 W. Votaw St., Portland, at 3:26 p.m. Thursday.
Kyle W. Stickrath, loss prevention officer at Wal-Mart, told a Portland Police officer a male and female went to a cashier to buy an item. They tried to pay with a large bill, and then repeatedly asked for different amounts of change in order to confuse the cashier.
