Patriot spikers receive honors

Four Jay County High School volleyball players recently received honors from the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association.
Abby Barcus was named to the ICGSA Junior All-Star team, and a trio of seniors — Abby Wendel, Ava Kunkler and Kylie Osborne — earned academic all-state recognition.
Abby Barcus was one of 14 players selected for the North squad for the upcoming ICGSA Junior All-Star game. More than 70 players attended the tryout Sunday.
Barcus will play a three-set match at 1 p.m. Sunday at Lawrence North in Indianapolis as part of an all-star tripleheader. She is the first player from Jay County to make the team.
Kunkler and Wendel were named to the ICGSA Academic All-State team. They are the first two from the JCHS volleyball team to receive such an honor.
Osborne was given academic all-state honorable mention.
To be considered for academic all-state, players must participate in 70 percent of their team’s games, accumulate a GPA of at least 3.4 and achieve an ACT score of 24 and above or an SAT score of 1,660 or above.

Duo leads EJ girls
MONROE — Pacie Denney and Grace Saxman scored enough to beat the Jets by themselves.
They led the East Jay Middle School seventh grade girls basketball team to a 26-14 victory against the Adams Central Jets on Tuesday.
East Jay’s eighth graders also won, 26-18.
The seventh grade Chiefs (1-1, 1-0 Allen County Athletic Conference) scored six points in each of the first two quarters while keeping the Jets without a point in the second frame. An eight-point effort by the Chiefs in the third put the game out of reach.
Denney led all players with nine points, and Saxman added eight. Aubrie Schwieterman totaled four points, with Alana Kunkler and Anna Heath chipping in with two points each.
Taylor May had a team-high eight points for the EJMS eighth graders (1-1, 1-0 ACAC). Asilyn Davis followed with six points, and Mikele Suman tallied four. Macey Weitzel, Mackynzie Fairchild and Sarah Muhlenkamp each had two points.
The Chief squads host Union City on Monday.

Link leads Chiefs
Gabe Link scored 13 points to lead the East Jay eighth grade boys basketball team to its first win of the season Tuesday.
The Chiefs knocked off Adams Central 27-19.
East Jay’s seventh graders also won, 26-16.
The EJMS eighth graders limited Adams Central to four points in each of the first two quarters, taking a 13-8 lead into halftime. The Chiefs’ defense suffocated the Jets in the third, allowing just two points in the frame.
Sheldon Upp scored five points to follow Link, and Brandon Cramer tallied four points. Noah Arbuckle and Brian Williams had three and two points respectively.
Griffin Mann and Bailey Cox scored seven points apiece to pace the seventh graders. Brian Zhang totaled six points and Landon Grimes had four.
Both teams move to 1-1 (1-0 ACAC) on the season.

WJ boys fall
BERNE — Peyton Nichols led the West Jay eighth grade boys basketball team in a 33-17 loss Tuesday to South Adams.
Nichols had a team-high  nine points. Brinnin Wasson and Dylan Bowler each tallied three points.
Trevon Vore chipped in with two points.
Seventh grade results were not available at press time.
